As a member of Residential Life, the Resident Director is a full-time, live-in staff member who will provide daily support to student living in student housing and will support the educational and operational priorities of the department in maintaining a safe, educational living environment. They will be able to assume responsibility for supervising student leaders, providing crisis support, and keeping the program operational.

The Resident Director is a live-in position that plays a vital part of helping to continue the vision and mission of the department. This position is responsible to support the development and administration of the residential life program. They are responsible for supervising live-in student staff, as well as overseeing the daily activities of buildings, housing up to 380 students. This position will counsel, advise, and refer individual students to appropriate resources. They will assist with the administrative functions of operating the residence hall and participate in the on-call and emergency response system.

This role lives in the building in order to be responsive to student needs, cultivate community, and manage risk. Success in this role includes:
• demonstrating sound judgment in crisis situations, including incidents that may involve campus or community emergency personnel
• applying knowledge of campus and community resources to facilitate referral of students in need
• interpreting and applying UW policies and procedures to counsel and advise students and student leaders and to develop programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision

• Select, train and supervise a diverse staff of 5-10 undergraduate students in developing communities for and responding to the needs of 300-400 residents using the Residential Curricular approach which provides a plan for learning and development.
• Monitors and evaluates student staff job performance and meeting regularly one-on-one.
• Provides recognition for staff job performance; implements the Departmental performance management process to address performance concerns.
• Participates in the Departmental processes designed to effectively select, orient, and train student staff.
• Plans and implements regular meetings and in-service activities that serve as on-the-job training and that promote opportunities for personal growth and development for a diverse paraprofessional student staff team.
• Participates in instructing the Spring Quarter Resident Advisor course.

Residential Education

• Implement the Curricular Approach as outlined in the departmental Residential Curriculum.
• Develop plans for learning for student staff and residents which involve a variety of educational interventions including, roommate agreements, husky chats, event planning and hosting campus experts for residential events.
• Assist with development of a student engagement curriculum which will link Residential Life and Student Engagement & Activities to expand engagement opportunities and outreach to students.
• Promote diverse and appropriate developmental activities to meet the needs of residents through community introduction, interaction, involvement, influence, investment, and identity.
• Provide academic outreach to students who need additional academic support in the transition to college

Advising Student Groups

• Serves as primary advisor to students involved in Hall Council or other Departmental student groups.
• Promotes collaboration between Hall Council leaders and the RA staff.
• Participates in student leadership-development trainings, round table discussions and assessments.

Building Operations Management

• Consults and works in collaboration with Capstone Management, Bothell Dining and university colleagues to assess and address building, community, and individual student needs.
• Perform quarterly unit inspections in coordination with Capstone Management.
• Manages opening and closing procedures in assigned community in collaboration with the community management team.
• Coordinates a life-safety program within the community.
• Participates in facilitating room changes, room reassignments, and occupancy reports as needed.
• Maintains records of forms, financial expenditures, and other necessary record.
• Establishes an RA/AA duty schedule.

Student Conduct

• Manages a student conduct caseload and maintains confidential records.
• Facilitates conduct meetings with students emphasizing personal responsibility and an understanding of how one’s behavior impacts self and others.
• Utilizes educational sanctioning in accordance with established Residential Life Conduct Process philosophy and guidelines.
• Facilitates educational workshops for students found in violation of the Lease Agreement.
• Represents Residential Life at Administrative Hearings as necessary.

Crisis Management

• Participates in an on-duty rotation throughout the calendar year to respond to incidents and emergencies as they occur for a residential population of approximately 1000 students.
• Implements Departmental/University emergency and crisis response protocols.
• Collaborates and consults with other Student Life professionals regarding students needing additional support/resources.
• Provides follow-up with students, campus services and parents as necessary.

Organizational Engagement

• Supports and assists in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values, and culture of Residential Life, Division of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs, and the University of Washington Bothell.
• Fosters and maintains a workplace climate that is supportive of all employees and students regardless of their identity, respectful of differences, and open to multiple perspectives.
• Participates in professional-development activities, included but not limited to: Departmental workshops, presentations, and article/book discussions.
• Provides leadership within the Residential Life Team and facilitates productive interactions with all staff.
• Role models an understanding of, and respect for, existing policies and procedures.
• Seeks opportunities to develop new and/or enhances current programs and activities.
• Participates in a professional organization and assumes leadership roles in campus, regional and/or national professional organizations.
• Develops and presents on various subjects to the Residential Life Team (and other departments as appropriate) based on workshops attended at regional/national conferences.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in education, Student Services, Higher Ed Administration or Counseling or Related Field.
• At least one year of recent (within the past 3 years) experience supervising or advising a diverse college-aged student staff or group/club.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to develop administrative systems to accomplish multiple tasks in an efficient manner, set priorities, and work well under pressure of deadlines.
• Ability to interact and communicate, orally and in writing, in an effective and approachable manner with students, staff, parents, and faculty from diverse backgrounds; and the ability to work in a team environment and develop cooperative relationships with others.

DESIRED:

• Master's degree in student development, higher education administration, or related field from an accredited college or university.
• One year of professional experience in college or university student services (graduate internship may apply towards professional experience).
• Demonstrated experience working with traditionally underrepresented groups.
• Experience living or working in a college residence hall strongly preferred.
• Diverse knowledge of university student population issues, including diversity, alcohol/drugs, safety and security, and health concerns in a university environment and strategies to positively impact.
• Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of student development and academic success.
• Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Demonstrated commitment to, and experience successfully advocating for, diversity and the value of diversity are desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The individual selected for this position must be willing and able to:
• Participate in an on-call RD on duty rotation providing coverage 7 days a week, 24-hours a day, including holidays.
• Work extended hours during peak times of the academic year.
• Work evening and occasional weekends throughout the year.
