The Executive Director will oversee the Institute’s keystone effort to extend the reach of its research through a new Center for Collaborative Research. Building upon the Institute’s global reputation as a singular venue for discovery and its long tradition of convening talent from across the world, the Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) will expand the Institute’s capacity for research in all fields by enabling flexible and scalable collaborations within and across disciplines. Offering the opportunity to engage in team-based, theme-based, interdisciplinary, and inter-institutional research, the CCR will support Institute Faculty and Members in their fundamental research as well as in any explorations of applications for that research they wish to undertake, and serve as a nexus for partnerships with other research institutions worldwide.

The Executive Director reports to Director and, in addition to oversight of the CCR, provides general support for the Institute’s interdisciplinary academic functions, which include its program of two Distinguished Director’s Professors and its 10-15 Von Neumann Members at Large.  The Executive Director will also support the Director in all academic functions of the Director’s Office.

Essential Job Duties

Center for Collaborative Research (60%)

  • In collaboration with the Director, design a process that brings the vision for the Center for Collaborative Research to life and expand the Institute’s capacity for discovery in all fields Partner with Director in designing an evaluative process for proposals, including an internal grant competition Work closely with the Director and colleagues from across the four Schools to launch and support research projects housed in the CCR Work closely with the Director and colleagues to launch and support partnerships with other research institutions Collaborate with colleagues from Schools, Events, and Facilities to program and manage space for scholars and convenings Partner with colleagues in the development and business offices to identify, administer, and steward foundations and individual donors to the CCR Build a team that oversees research development and support for all CCR activities

Academic affairs coordination (20%)

  • Support Director’s Professorships and Members-at-Large Support the Director in other academic functions of the Director’s Office (ad hoc committees, recruitment, academic partnerships, on-site research associates,etc.)

Budget modeling and management (10%)

  • Model annual and long-term budgets and manage CCR research and operational budgets with the business office

All other duties as assigned by the Director (10%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-baccalaureate degree Minimum of 10 years of related experience, with demonstrated strong leadership potential and well-developed interpersonal skills for promoting collegiality  Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Faculty and Staff in an academic and professional setting
  • Excellent analytical, planning and organizational skills Excellent written and oral communication skills Exceptionally strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to consistently be diplomatic, tactful and professional Ability to interact with Faculty, Trustees, and leaders from other organizations, and all levels of staff Strong interest in academic institutional policies and playing a leadership role in research institutional life Ability to draft original correspondence and condense/summarize material Capacity to work independently on multiple projects by prioritizing, multi-tasking, and being flexible Sound judgment and discretion when working with sensitive and confidential information

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD Previous experience in strategic planning, administrative processes, academic program development, and faculty recruitment and retention
  • Prior experience directing an academic research center, or as a research foundation Program Officer/Director, or at the Assistant/Associate Dean/Provost-level of a major academic research institution
