Instructor or Lecturer in Small Animal Primary Care 12-month basis

Requirements: The successful candidates must have a DVM degree or equivalent and have a minimum of 3 years of experience in small animal primary care practice. Preference will be given to candidates with American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) certification or equivalent, advanced degree(s) and/or prior clinical trainer experience or practice management experience.

Duties: The successful candidate(s) will be expected to provide clinical service in small animal primary care, contribute to the clinical instruction of students as well as interns interested in gaining primary care experience, and communicate with clients and colleagues in both specialty and general practice. The successful candidate(s) will offer efficient delivery of comprehensive well-pet care including care for dogs and cats of all life stages, vaccinations, preventative medicine and nutrition counselling, and health certification for both domestic and international travel, as well as diagnosis and primary medical and surgical management of common diseases. A high quality standard of care is expected by clients of the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the successful candidate will be expected to remain versed and current on all developments, recommendations, and trends pertaining to small animal primary care to the level associated with the AVMA and AAHA standard of excellence. Primary care clients enjoy ready access to specialty services of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The successful candidate(s) will excel in teaching small animal primary care to veterinary students within the academic teaching hospital environment. Teaching responsibilities will include instruction of veterinary students on clinical rotation and in small group discussions. Topics may include, but are not limited to, common medical and surgical aspects of primary care as well as management issues common to private veterinary practice. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to foster client relations and collegiality with general practitioners in the local community.

In 2020, the Primary Care service relocated to occupy the newly developed clinical space in the Veterinary Medicine South Clinic which includes dedicated reception, exam, treatment and procedure, surgical, and imaging spaces. The Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine features modern research and animal care facilities. The successful applicant would be responsible for instruction predominantly of students in the professional veterinary curriculum. In addition, the faculty and staff provide broad public engagement through operation of the clinical services. Through its academic sections, Veterinary Clinical Medicine conducts discovery, instruction and service relevant to companion animals; horses; food and fiber animals; exotic, wildlife and zoological species. We are dedicated not only to animal health and welfare, but to improvement of human and environmental well-being through improved understanding of the human-animal bond, food production systems and ecosystem health.

Salary: Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and credentials.

Terms of Appointment: Based on a full-time, twelve-month appointment; 24 work days' vacation per year; 12 paid holidays; 12 days annual sick leave plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System is required upon appointment (8% of member's salary is withheld and is tax exempt until retirement.
