As Barnard College’s chief academic officer, the Provost and Dean of the Faculty (“Provost”) will be a distinctive higher education administrator and accomplished scholar of both national and international standing. With enduring commitment to a strong undergraduate liberal arts education, they will possess a track record of impactful academic leadership at a meaningful scale and complexity, fully embracing Barnard’s culture of collaboration and creativity. They will understand and engage in all academic disciplines and will demonstrate a deep understanding of current issues in higher education, have an enterprising mindset, and a demonstrated track record of successfully implementing change in response to dynamic economic, political, and social forces. They will have a distinctive scholarly reputation and a deep understanding of faculty needs and challenges.

Of equal importance is a leadership style that emphasizes communication, accessibility, collaboration, and decisiveness, all of which are critical to leading the academic enterprise. They will also have an authentic and engaging interpersonal style that values and thrives on interacting with faculty members across diverse academic units, students at all stages of their educational journey, administrators, staff, alumni, the Board of Trustees and external constituents. They will be a champion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. Being highly analytical, data-informed, and financially and operationally astute, they will serve as a trusted partner to the President and senior leaders in advancing the College’s impressive trajectory of academic excellence.

The Provost will provide administrative leadership and oversight in support of the academic programs of Barnard College, ensuring that the education offered to its undergraduates is rigorous, flexible, and equitable, and meets the highest standards of quality.  

Candidates with diverse professional backgrounds will be considered. Strong candidates will have many of the following attributes:

  • A Ph.D., over a decade of experience at higher education institutions, and an outstanding reputation of scholarly achievement and teaching excellence requisite for an appointment as a tenured full professor at both Barnard College and Columbia University.
  • Strong academic and administrative leadership experience overseeing a complex organization, including an appreciation of the dynamics of a liberal arts college working within a research university environment.
  • Skill and acumen in setting financial priorities, driving systems-based thinking, and allocating resources in a responsible, mission-oriented manner that prioritizes institutional effectiveness.
  • Proven ability to initiate and execute creative academic, research, and student-oriented strategies and programs that cut across units and disciplines, with differing needs and priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully diversifying faculty while supporting and advocating for the core institutional values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the ability to point to specific initiatives and improvements in this area.
  • A record of attracting, mentoring, and retaining exceptionally talented individuals, and building a team of academic leaders who collaborate effectively to build innovative programs.

Salary Range

The estimated annual salary range is $350,000–$475,000. Actual salary will be dependent on the individual’s skills, experience, and qualifications. Additionally, the Provost and Dean of Faculty is provided housing and participates in the full range of Barnard College benefits.
