Position Description Summary/Purpose :

This position is responsible for transporting University, High School, Middle School and Elementary School students as well as faculty and staff for University and Magnet School to classes and related functions and events. The primary vehicles used for this purpose are 42 and 44 passenger buses.

This position will also operate a tractor-trailer combination or truck with a capacity of at least 26,00 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). Setup and breakdown of equipment required.

This is a part-time, per diem position for approximately 15-20 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities :

  • Transports University, Magnet School Students, faculty and staff, around campus for classes and other community related events.
  • In addition, transports University, Magnet School Students, faculty and staff, throughout the State of Connecticut as required for various classes, educational functions or community related events.
  • Checks vehicle to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Maintains logs of working hours of vehicle service or repair status, following applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Secure cargo for transport, using ropes, blocks, chain, binders, or covers.
  • Set up and break down equipment in trailer.
  • Follows appropriate safety procedures.
  • Works a flexible schedule.
  • Responsible for University Vehicle cleanliness, and the coordination of minor repairs with the Fleet Manager.
  • Conducts all work in a safe manner and ensures that all work safety practices and followed.
Other Functions :
  • Assists with tours, public relations events, fairs and marketing presentations.
  • Conducts demonstrations on the mobile lab.
  • Leads workshops for visitors, students and clients.
  • Assists faculty during CE training workshops.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
  • Continues professional development and training; keeps current with trends.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by road
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, state laws, regulations and strategies for safe operation of vehicles
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service
  • Ability to manage one’s own time; work with little supervision; demonstrate reliability; be a team player; be flexible with schedules and duties
  • Must be professional and friendly
  • Good communication skills

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications :

Education, Training and Experience :
  • Class A commercial driver license
  • Class B CDL License- with a P endorsement
  • Maintain a valid commercial driver medical certification as required by CT State law. Presently this is every 2 years.
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience working with children
Special Requirements :
  • Ability to pass extensive background check
  • Submit to random drug and alcohol testing
