Facilities Services invites applications for a Maintenance Worker I to perform intermediate to advanced custodial duties, including specialty cleaning as it pertains to the work unit or area and seasonal cleaning work. The person in this position will Inform supervisor of observed problems and handle the more routine reports or requests repairs to facility. Reports equipment maintenance needs to supervisor. This position may have management or supervisory duties as a fill-in supervisor at times.

Department Specific Duties:
  • Understands and follows custodial policies and procedures
  • Has a thorough knowledge of their building assignment(s)
  • Provides quality customer service to the building staff, faculty, students, and the general public
  • Establishes positive communication with co-workers, staff, faculty, students, and the general public
  • Participates in regular meetings and safety trainings
  • Ensures proper use and maintenance of custodial equipment and that work is performed in a safe manner
  • Has knowledge of green cleaning methods and the environmental impact of cleaning
  • Report building irregularities to Maintenance Supervisor I
  • Understand key protocols and building security
Custodial Duties:
  • Clean and sanitize restroom surfaces and fixtures
  • Collect trash and clean public garbage cans
  • Stock paper and soap dispensers
  • Vacuum carpeted areas, sweep and mop floors including stairs
  • Sanitize high touch surfaces
  • Damp dust horizontal surfaces and clean classroom tabletops
  • Change lights and clean reachable light fixtures as needed
  • Clean chalkboards and whiteboards in teaching areas
  • Replace dry erase markers, chalk, and erasers as needed
  • Clean entryways including glass (weather permitting)
  • Sweep outside entryways (weather permitting)
  • Remove snow/ice from building entryways when needed
  • Clean drinking fountains, sinks, and elevators
  • Clean ceiling vents
  • Any additional cleaning duties assigned by Maintenance Supervisor I
Grounds Duties:
  • Mowing
  • Trimming with weed eater
  • Clear sidewalks with leaf blower
  • Pick up large debris
  • Disinfect exterior surfaces including patio furniture
  • Pressure wash patio and exterior spills
  • Remove bird droppings
  • Maintain equipment
  • Organize and clean grounds shed
  • Report equipment problems
  • Report sprinkler system problems

Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
  • Lifting: Ground to 60 inches, up to 75 pounds. Ground to 36 inches, up to 100 pounds.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 100 pounds for 10 feet or less.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Up to 200 pounds of weight (materials and during the use of tools). Push force required 100 pounds sustained, and pull force required 100 pounds sustained.
  • Bending, stretching, twisting, or reaching with your body, arms, and/or legs in all directions.
  • Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
  • Working overhead from various positions (standing, squatting, and on knees).
  • Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Trunk rotation from a standing position.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold.
  • Walking various distances throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces, distances up to 1000 feet.
  • Use of manual and finger dexterity to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 pounds of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 pounds).
  • Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Possess more than twelve (12) months directly related cleaning experience, or a combination of experience and education
  • Some university experiences
  • Knowledge of university departmental cleaning needs and expertise in handling work within the unit or department
  • Ability to perform seasonal/cyclical cleaning work such as carpet extraction and refinishing floors

Position Details

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), 12 months/year,

Monday through Friday 3:30 pm to 12:00 am(midnight)

Salary: $16.994/hr

Union Affiliation: Operating Engineers Local 400

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
