Position Function:

The successful candidate should have the potential and be willing to engage in high-impact teaching of core construction specialization in undergraduate and graduate courses, innovative and collaborative research, and/or scholarly outreach and service activities. The Building Construction Science program is unique in its project-based learning model (via studios) in which students work on team projects/ problem-based tasks via extended class time in collaboration with peers (within and outside specialization) and under guidance of instructors to enhance their content knowledge, technical and managerial competencies, and leadership & team skills. The vision of the Building Construction Science Department is to be a global leader in education, research, and innovation in the built environment. The mission is to create stimulating learning experiences for our students by engaging them in the discovery of techniques and management of construction processes and projects.

Department Profile:

The Department of Building Construction Science (BCS) in the College of Architecture, Art, and Design invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level starting in August of 2024. Located in a college that includes the disciplines of architecture, art, and interior design, the BCS Department utilizes a core curriculum of eight different six-credit, project-based studios that integrate multiple construction content areas coordinated to advance integrated design/construction education. Through its innovative approach to interdisciplinary education in the built environment, the BCS Department produces collaborative-minded construction professionals – critical thinkers who rigorously engage new challenges in the rapidly changing construction and business environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Successful candidates will be expected to teach studio and lecture courses, engage in scholarly research, and participate in service. The typical faculty workload consists of teaching a combined total of eighteen credit-hours per academic year. The studio format provides extended class time to allow for project development, team projects and lab exercises, collaboration with architecture studios, and site activities. Successful candidates will have a 9-month appointment. Successful candidates should be prepared to teach in one or more of the following areas: Estimating, Scheduling, Construction Documents, Equipment, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Construction Technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Construction Management, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
Evidence of construction-related teaching and research, outreach and scholarship.
Excellent communication (oral, written, and digital) skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of successful teaching of undergraduate and/or graduate construction courses. Evidence of high-impact teaching and active student engagement.
Ability to teach emerging topics in the built environment, such as BIM.
Industry Advanced education, professional registration, or other relevant credentials. Evidence of active research engagement, including publications and presentations in appropriate venues. Evidence of industry outreach engagement. Evidence of university service engagement. Demonstrated experience in developing new courses, curricula, and programs. Demonstrated ability to deal with diverse cultures and groups of people.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Successful candidate(s) will have teaching experience and a potential research agenda.
