Position Title: Assistant Professor, Director of Choirs

Department: Music

Position Summary: Washburn University’s Department of Music invites applications for the position of Director of Choirs. The position will begin August 1, 2024. This position is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor. A completed doctorate is necessary for a tenure-track appointment.

Essential Functions:
• Fulfill teaching expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor. Teach on average 12-load hours per semester (either in-person or online, according to departmental needs) or an equivalent full workload as outlined in the faculty handbook. These courses will include courses in conducting and other classes that fit the successful applicant’s qualifications.
• Serve as Director of Choirs for the Washburn University Choir and Washburn University Singers.
• Teach music courses assigned to fit the successful applicant’s qualifications, including courses in choral conducting, vocal pedagogy and literature, and applied voice.
• Establish a successful record of creative/scholarship activity.
• Maintain an active level of professional activity in high school recruitment.
• Expected to contribute to the life of the department and university through service activities.
• Perform additional job-related functions as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
• Doctorate in music with an emphasis in Choral Conducting; ABD applicants will be considered with completion of the doctorate required by August 2025.
• Experience in conducting university vocal ensembles.
• Classroom teaching experience.
• Demonstrated commitment to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with planning, organizing and directing all choral/vocal activities at the university level.
• Experience teaching music at the elementary and secondary levels in public education.
• Experience in diverse choral literature, including contemporary music and other popular idioms.
• Experience with organizing and developing community youth choral programs.
• Experience teaching music education courses at the university level.
• Demonstrate the ability to recruit and teach both major and non-major vocalists from diverse backgrounds.
