Earlham College is seeking a Senior Director of Marketing and Digital Strategy to join our team!

Summary: We’re a small team full of big thinkers, and we’re looking for someone who can connect people and ideas to bring the Earlham story to life in vivid and novel ways. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with a record of success in planning and executing marketing and creative campaigns that inspire audiences to take action. With an ambitious eight-year plan to grow our enrollment and secure the College’s financial sustainability, admissions and institutional advancement are our main areas of focus. That said, our central marketing and communications team is responsible for marketing strategies and creative work that support and elevate Earlham’s executive communications, events, media and community relations, and academic and co-curricular initiatives such as our signature Epic Journey program.

Essential Functions:
  • Lead an integrated approach to marketing and creative that spans from ideation and planning to tactical execution, measurement and refinement.
  • Work with colleagues in Admission, Advancement, Student Life, Academic Affairs, Athletics, and the Earlham School of Religion to identify opportunities for growth and synergy, build and execute divisional plans that reflect institutional priorities, and ensure that work is effective, on-budget and timely.
  • Exemplify a commitment to excellence and uphold the highest standards for creative work — in this team, good enough simply isn’t.
  • Provide creative direction across a variety of media (including graphic design, written marketing content and video) grounded in Earlham’s brand expression.
  • Prioritize communication and client service, ensuring that the work the creative team produces meets or exceeds the expectations of our campus partners.
  • Cultivate a culture of innovation, possibility and excellence reflecting best practices across and outside of higher education.
  • Use market research and performance analytics to make informed recommendations and decisions on everything from marketing tactics to program development.
  • Define strategy and lead the execution of tactics across digital and traditional/print media to drive engagement and inspire action among a variety of audiences.
  • Oversee, track and report on performance of earned and paid media efforts — both digital and traditional.
  • Oversee agency partnerships and freelance/contract work.
  • Identify opportunities to highlight students, alumni, faculty and other members of the Earlham community who embody the For Good brand.
  • Foster understanding of, enthusiasm for, and use of the For Good brand among campus constituents.
  • Serve as a key leader and mentor in the Office of Marketing and Communications by championing the team’s work, modeling and implementing best practices, and identifying opportunities for professional development and growth.
  • Ensure that the work produced by the marketing and creative team reflects and celebrates the diversity of the Earlham community.
Scope of responsibility:

Working with the full support of the marketing and creative team, the scope of the Director/Senior Director for Marketing and Creative’s work includes the following:

Strategy and planning: Work with the Marketing and Communications team and external partners to identify strategic goals; develop, map out and execute marketing plans and/or communications flows; and determine appropriate performance metrics.

Creative direction: Develop a sophisticated and nuanced understanding of the For Good brand and how it applies to different audiences. Provide clear and effective direction to the creative team that aligns with the goals and expectations of campus partners.

Client services: Develop a deep understanding of the College’s priorities and the people who are charged with driving them forward. Build strong relationships and maintain regular and open communication with key campus partners, ensuring that our collaborative work delivers results and inspires trust and confidence.

Analytics and reporting: Identify KPIs and establish benchmarks (industry standards and/or past performance) for paid media performance, organic social media performance, email marketing, and earned media initiatives. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports to be shared with key stakeholders, including the Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the President, the Board of Trustees, and donors who fund marketing initiatives. Use analytics to inform future tactics.

Leadership and management: Lead a team of three direct reports in a way that is proactive, relationship-focused and grounded in individual and collective strengths. Oversee marketing and creative operations to ensure high-quality, effective and timely work from staff and vendors.

Marketing and creative expertise: Establish and maintain best practices in: the development and implementation of communications flows for admissions, advancement and other campus partners; the management and assessment of digital marketing and other paid media campaigns; the implementation and evaluation of SEO strategy and content development on the Earlham and Earlham School of Religion websites; the management of Earlham’s social media channels; and occasional internal communications initiatives.

Brand stewardship: Ensure that all external-facing collateral and campaigns reflect the For Good brand. Engage campus partners in workshops and conversations about how and why branding matters. Keep the campus community and alumni informed about marketing and communications initiatives, particularly as they relate to enrollment.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, graphic design, public relations, journalism or a related field.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in marketing, communications or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience (those with more comprehensive experience will be considered for the senior director role).
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment of leading high performing teams.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in executing marketing strategies to that inspire audiences to take action, preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creative work of the highest quality (either through your own work or direct management of an agency or vendor partner).
  • Demonstrated experience and success in integrated marketing, including traditional and digital advertising strategies, direct marketing, email marketing and CRM.
  • Experience in research-based and data-driven decision-making.
  • An appreciation for collaboration, consensus-building and the liberal arts, all of which are highly valued on Earlham’s campus.
  • Ability to collaborate and build understanding across diverse functional areas, perspectives and points of view.
  • Exemplary writing, editing and interpersonal communication skills.
