POSITION: Tenure Track Assistant Professor

LOCATION: Health and Exercise Science

Job Description:

The Department of Health and Exercise Science at New Jersey City University invites applicants in Health and Physical Education/ Exercise Science for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Appropriate candidates must have an earned Doctorate in Physical Education/ Exercise Science or a related discipline from an accredited institution by the start of the appointment period. The appointment includes research, curriculum development, and outreach. Faculty members are expected to be active scholars, advise students, and participate in department, college, and university committees and activities. Review of applications will begin in late October 2023, and it will continue until the position is filled. Applicants must successfully complete an interview process, and the finalists will conduct a teaching and research presentation.

Minimum Qualifications: An earned Doctorate in Physical Education/ Exercise Science or a related discipline from an accredited institution by the start of the appointment period.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of successful university teaching in physical education, teaching and research methods, exercise prescription, as well as other courses that fit within the needs of the Exercise Science degree program and the candidate’s expertise.
  2. Industry-relevant professional certifications.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in health education, physical education pedagogy, curriculum development, coaching, or related areas.
  4. Previous leadership or coordinator-level experience.
  5. Demonstrated collegiality to participate in and support a collaborative, interdisciplinary work environment.
  6. Experience and interest in working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.
  7. Knowledge of how to oversee Health & Physical Education (K-12) student teacher placement, partnering with public schools in surrounding New Jersey areas.


  1. Teach undergraduate courses in exercise science, health, and physical education.
  2. Develop an undergraduate program in Health and Physical Education.
  3. Establish and sustain an active research agenda.
  4. Advise and mentor undergraduate students for academic curricula and professional careers.
  5. Perform professional service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.
