About this Opportunity

Ball State University seeks a visionary, innovative leader committed to making a sustainable impact on education systems to serve as the next dean of its Teachers College.

Reporting directly to Provost Anand R. Marri, the next dean will champion the mission and strategic plan of one of Ball State’s largest and most complex academic units and build on an ethos of collaboration and collegiality to advance an institutional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The dean of Teachers College will work with campus leaders to steward the continuing implementation of a new incentive based budget model in the college, champion faculty, staff and student success, and enhance community engagement. In particular, the dean will play a critical role in supporting Ball State’s historic partnership with Muncie Community Schools ( MCS ).

For 100 years, Teachers College has prepared educators through student-centric learning experiences while enabling faculty to conduct high-impact research that advances the field of education. Perennially ranked among the best schools of education in the nation, the college enrolls nearly 5,000 students in undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs on campus and online across six departments.

Located in Muncie, Ind., Ball State serves approximately 20,000 graduate and undergraduate students across seven academic colleges with 190 undergraduate programs. Ball State offers
more than 140 master’s, doctoral, certificate, and specialist degrees, many of which rank among the best in the nation. Originally founded to fill a growing need for highly qualified teachers, Ball State has earned the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation, and it serves as one of Indiana’s three public research universities.

As the chief academic and administrative officer of Teachers College, the dean is responsible for the development, modification, and administration of academic programs, financial resources, and personnel to advance the college’s strategic goals and priorities. The dean oversees exceptional
faculty who are experts in their fields and among the most renowned scholars at the University.

Position Function

Teachers College directly oversees the Burris Laboratory School, a public K–12 school, and the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, a residential public high school for gifted and talented juniors and seniors from across the state. Additionally, the Office of Charter Schools authorizes 21 charter schools throughout the Indiana.

Minimum Education

A terminal degree in a relevant field is required.

Evidence of scholarly and professional achievement that merits a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of professor at Ball State University.

  • Sophisticated ability to manage resources and complex
    budgets in a decentralized environment, and capacity
    to develop, implement, and administer policies and
    procedures that support institutional mission and goals;
  • Commitment to graduate and undergraduate education
    and capacity for developing innovative educational
    opportunities at both the graduate and undergraduate
    levels;
  • Ability to represent Teachers College and articulate its
    mission and vision compellingly to internal and external
    audiences, and the drive and capacity to enhance the
    college’s public presence, impact, and reach;
  • Ability and willingness to play a signature role in
    fundraising efforts; a record of or demonstrable potential
    for success in securing external funding;
  • Agility, flexibility, tolerance for ambiguity, and experience
    in or capacity for managing change; and
  • Familiarity with educator and school service personnel
    certification and experience with regulatory and
    accrediting agencies.

Advance a unifying vision for the college’s future.

The dean will advance the college’s strategic plan in alignment with the University’s strategic plan and priorities. To be an effective champion for the college, the dean must recognize and celebrate the value of each of its distinctive departments, centers, clinics, and labs; the Burris Laboratory School; and the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities. The dean must be able to understand and advocate for each unit individually and facilitate opportunities for collaborations among them to the benefit of the college, the University, the community, and the field.
