Colorado State University seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate Vice President, Facilities Management (AVP FM), a senior leadership position reporting to the Vice President for University Operations and Chief Financial Officer. The AVP FM is a key member of the operations leadership team who is committed to excellence and is dedicated to achieving the University’s mission to set the standard for public higher education in teaching, research and service.

The Associate Vice President, Facilities Management is a talented leader who successfully manages a large, complex and diverse organization and works as a team member with other high-level professionals both within, and external to, the Division of University Operations. The position requires professional standards of high quality, responsiveness, the ability to simultaneously lead at an executive level and to directly engage in projects as needed. This position plays an integral role in the University’s pursuit of excellence in all programs, whether directly or indirectly related to its academic, research, service and outreach missions.

The AVP FM administers programs necessary to maintain and enhance the functionality and aesthetics of existing University facilities, infrastructure and grounds to meet the University’s goals, programmatic needs and mission. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to work successfully with diverse groups, including University leaders, state and local officials, University employees, students, and members of the public. In particular, the AVP FM must establish and maintain good working relationships with academic, auxiliary, support and research units to develop solutions and organizational buy-in. The AVP FM must also have a strong commitment to the overall best interests of the University including an abiding commitment to serving the diverse needs of the University community, the active promotion of an equitable and inclusive environment, and the development and enhancement of collaborative relationships. The work of Facilities Management is guided by and in alignment with CSU’s Principles of Community, and the mission and values of Facilities Management.

Facilities Management (FM) provides campus planning, capital design, and contracting, remodel, and construction services, custodial and operational support, building maintenance, and campus utilities. FM has a broad and relatively deep organizational structure with a variety of career and part-time employees including architects, engineers, and its own building department with certified building officials and inspectors.

Facilities Management oversees more than 8,100,000 gross square feet of academic and administrative buildings. Its annual operating budget of $46 million as well as recharge budget of $64 million includes regular building maintenance, utility infrastructure, purchased utilities and remodel and construction services. Current major construction projects total $775 million, with an additional $210 million pending.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, construction management, engineering, sustainability, planning, public administration, or related field 10 years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in leading and managing a complex, multi-faceted organization responsible for facility planning, including experience in oversite of building infrastructure and maintenance; architectural design and construction; sustainability practices and green building principles; or facility safety and code compliance Experience developing and implementing strategic or tactical plans, objectives, and complex budgets Experience developing collaborative partnerships among diverse groups, both internal and external to the organization At least 3 years experience in briefing and presenting to executive leadership and oversight boards Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills
