The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) invites applications for a full-time lecturer to teach courses in introductory, intermediate, and advanced quantitative methods for graduate students in education and the social sciences. This three-year teaching position begins in July 2024 with a renewable three-year term contingent upon satisfactory performance review.
Quantitative methods sequences at HGSE prepare hundreds of Ed.M. and Ph.D students each year to conduct and critique applied quantitative research in education and the social sciences. HGSE students may choose from three established pathways and over a dozen additional complementary and advanced courses in quantitative methods.
We seek a lecturer who can teach or co-teach 3-4 courses in applied quantitative methods each academic year. One of these would be a semester-long core course in applied multivariate and multilevel regression, including experimental and quasi-experimental methods. Another of these would be a foundational course in August term that is required for all Ed.M. students. Additional courses would be aligned to the candidate’s expertise and interests and complementary to existing offerings. Topics can include those related to causal inference, meta-analysis, data science, experimental design, longitudinal modeling, quantitative text analysis, and psychometric methods, among others.
We seek candidates who have the interest, enthusiasm, and potential to teach and mentor master’s and doctoral students who pursue both research and practice-based careers in education. The candidate is expected to make meaningful contributions to the core curriculum of our graduate programs by teaching required courses and recommended elective courses as part of specific program pathways. The ability to help students develop conceptual as well as procedural professional knowledge beyond one’s own specific expertise is essential to our graduate programs.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of high-quality teaching of quantitative methods. High-quality teaching leads to both improved understanding and ability to use quantitative methods as well as an improved sense of belonging to a community of quantitatively fluent learners. Teaching is greatly valued at HGSE, and the school is committed to cultivating and supporting effective pedagogical practices among faculty, including through our Teaching and Learning Lab, which provides consultation services for faculty teaching. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to HGSE initiatives focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. HGSE faculty at all ranks advise master’s students, mentor doctoral students, and participate in institutional governance and service.
By the position start date of July 1, 2024, candidates will possess a doctorate in education or a related field, with demonstrated experience conducting research related to education.
