Job Description:

SUNY Empire State University is seeking a Lecturer of Physics and Mathematics to join the Department of Natural Sciences in the School of Science, Mathematics and Technology (SMT). The School of SMT offers associate and bachelor's degrees in the Science, Mathematics, and Technology area of study, with concentrations in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics, and related areas.

The Lecturer of Physics and Mathematics will teach and mentor (advise) students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines and guide students as they pursue individualized degree programs and prior learning assessment. Instruction takes place through multiple modalities including online courses, independent studies, and study groups. SUNY Empire supports faculty in their work with students and provides professional development activities that enhance their teaching and mentoring skills. The university makes extensive use of technological applications for communication, teaching and learning, and administrative purposes given its highly distributed environment. Engagement in scholarly activities is supported for this position but is not required.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach introductory Physics and Mathematics courses and develop advanced studies in their area of expertise.
  • Offer studies through multiple modalities including online courses, independent studies, and study groups that enroll students across New York State, nationally, and world-wide.
  • Collaborate with Natural Sciences and Mathematics colleagues to update and expand the curriculum and contribute to program development.
  • Mentor/advise students to develop individualized degree plans that span a broad range of academic disciplines.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across the faculty role.
  • Participate in service opportunities that support the department and university.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in Physics, Engineering, or closely related fields.
  • College-level teaching experience in relevant content areas.
  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.
  • Strong communication, computer, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work within a distributed, collaborative faculty environment.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in Physics, Engineering, or closely related fields.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult teaching and learning.
  • Experience with teaching in online learning environments.
  • Experience with course development and/or revision.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
  • Prior knowledge of and experience in working with bilingual and emergent bilingual learners, particularly in online settings.
  • Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Special Information:

  • Full-time temporary 12-month position.
  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university commitments.
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate students' needs.
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.
  • VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • SUNY Empire provides employees with robust remote and flexible work options to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff in a dispersed work environment. University locations that may be considered include Saratoga Springs, Rochester and Selden, NY.

Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: Lecturer, $65,000.
