The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chancellor.
UMD is a comprehensive regional university set on the beautiful shores of Lake Superior. UMD consistently ranks among the top Midwestern, regional universities in U.S. News and World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” issue. Providing an alternative to both large research universities and small liberal arts colleges, UMD attracts students looking for a personalized learning experience on a medium-sized campus of a major university system. As a sea-grant and land-grant university that acknowledges its location on the traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous people, UMD achieves its mission through vibrant and high-quality academic, co-curricular, and student support programs; impactful research, scholarship, and creative activities; and broad public engagement.
Reporting to the President of the University of Minnesota System, the Chancellor will lead the Duluth campus in advancing its contributions to fulfilling the mission of the University of Minnesota. In addition, the Chancellor will guide UMD in its campus commitments to excellence in teaching and scholarship, student centeredness, and engaged citizenship. The Chancellor will provide strong leadership in achieving current goals and establishing new and ambitious plans to advance the vibrant campus in coordination with the broader University of Minnesota System’s strategies and mission.
The key opportunities for impact for the next Chancellor are shaping UMD’s identity, creating enrollment opportunities, improving long-term fiscal stability, advocating for a student-centric environment, fostering research, providing leadership and strategic vision, championing DEI and a sense of belonging, supporting UMD Bulldog athletics, and collaborating to craft a bright future for UMD. Strong candidates will have a demonstrated record of senior leadership as an executive officer and will be able to articulate and champion UMD’s distinctive vision and campus culture to diverse audiences. Candidates should demonstrate strategic thinking, possess outstanding interpersonal and public communication skills, and be collaborative and creative.
