The Department of Chemistry ( at Lehman College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in August 2024. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program involving undergraduate and/or graduate students and also be committed to excellence in the teaching and mentoring of students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We invite candidates to demonstrate their ability to use evidence-based educational techniques to support student learning. It is also expected that the successful candidate will devote a portion of their time to engaging in departmental, college, university, and/or community service, with a specific focus on student advising, curriculum development, and assessment efforts. Of particular interest to us are candidates whose research interests have a focus on the design of materials with applications in health and/or the environment. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged. Candidates with a background in Data Science, AI and/or Machine Learning are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to build a research presence in their field and demonstrate that their research both complements and further expands the department's existing research programs.


Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or related field, is required.

To be considered qualified for this position, the applicants must have:

• a demonstrated potential for developing and sustaining an independent externally funded research program involving undergraduate and/or graduate students leading to peer-reviewed publications.

• a record of research productivity and/or evidence of the potential to supervise undergraduate and/or graduate-level students in research within their field.

• the ability to communicate effectively within an economically, ethnically and culturally diverse campus population.

• a strong commitment and/or demonstrated potential for effective teaching using student-centered, active- and inquiry-based learning approaches. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate lecture and/or laboratory courses within the Department of Chemistry.

  • A research statement that includes their research experience, research plans and research goals. Candidates should describe projects that are specifically designed to engage students at every level (undergraduate and graduate) and present strategies to obtain external funding. (5-page limit)

  • A statement of diversity that explains how their vision of diversity in science has been shaped by their experiences. This statement should include any experience working with a diverse group of students if applicable. (2 pages)

  • A list of three references with relevant contact information.
