The Department of Counselor Education at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 10-month, non-tenure-track, Clinical Specialist, to join our community starting in August 2024 . The position is offered for an initial two-year appointment, with potential for renewal for a second two-year appointment and subsequent three-year appointments based on performance.

Position Summary:

The successful candidate will serve as a 10-month, non-tenure track, core counselor education program faculty member who is responsible for effective teaching (4-3 load), advising, and professional activity in the field of counseling (sustained memberships in counseling associations, maintenance of certifications and/or licenses in counseling, sustained professional development and service to the profession).

Candidates should be committed to inclusive excellence in higher education, demonstrated through, for example, culturally responsive course design and pedagogy, equity-minded student engagement and mentorship, and cultivating intercultural competencies needed for meaningful citizenship.

Candidates should be strongly committed to high quality teaching and to encouraging and mentoring highly motivated students. Clinical Specialists also serve as academic advisors and may have service responsibilities within their department and school, and the college. TCNJ supports its community of teacher-scholars and practitioners through a range of internal grant programs, professional travel, engaging professional development programs, and other mechanisms. These intentional efforts support the recruitment, retention, and success of our faculty, particularly those from groups traditionally underrepresented in academe.

Qualifications:

Applicants should:

● Have an earned doctoral degree in counselor education, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program, or have related doctoral degrees and have been employed as full-time faculty members in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. ABD candidates must have completed the PhD by the time the appointment begins.

● Two years or more of direct clinical experience outside of academia, preferably as a clinical mental health counselor.

● Demonstrate cultural competency and ability to foster inclusive learning environments and mutual respect for students and colleagues.

● Have, or be eligible for, professional counseling certifications and/or licenses in New Jersey.

Preferred qualifications

● Have at least two years of teaching experience and a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment.

About the Department:

The Department of Counselor Education, which consists of seven full-time faculty members, has the first and longest running CACREP-accredited programs in New Jersey in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Faculty in the department also have the option of teaching at our international site in Lisbon, Portugal every summer.
