The Dance Department in the College of Performing Arts at Chapman University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, Instructional Assistant Professor of Dance, beginning August 2024.

The Dance Department embodies Chapman's mission of providing students with a personalized education of distinction by fostering an outstanding community of teacher-scholars, providing small classes, and offering a vast array of opportunities such as our residencies sponsored by the Musco Center for the Arts. Our new state-of-the-art Sandi Simon Center for Dance is home to 160 dance majors pursuing conservatory level training within a liberal arts curriculum. Our new colleague must have a strong record of collaborative work and excellent communication and organizational skills.

This instructional position requires 12 credits each semester of in-person on-campus teaching at the undergraduate level and will include teaching primarily lecture courses such as music for dancers, dance production, introduction to dance studies, dance history and dance education and outreach. Additional teaching in technique/movement classes will be based on the candidate's area of expertise. The successful candidate will also serve as the production coordinator for the department's many concerts and be responsible for organizing auditions, assigning and helping to train student crew, and serving as the liaison between the Dance Department and production staff. This is a 2-year minimum contract position with the expectation that it will be renewed in an on-going manner.


Minimum qualifications include:
  • MFA in Dance or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in lecture and technique/movement courses
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogical practices
  • Experience in producing and directing dance concerts at the university level
  • Record of work using collaborative perspectives
  • Background and understanding of both the commercial and concert dance industries
