Job Description:

OFFICIAL TITLE: Staff Assistant, Area Coordinator
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Director of Residence Life and Student Experience
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises Graduate/Undergraduate Assistant, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, and student staff.

General Statement of Duties: This person will advise, support and guide students and leaders to help them grow and develop through one-on-one interactions, programs, educational outreach, supervision and advising. This position will work collaboratively with students, staff, faculty, and community members to build a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. This person will also perform administrative duties within the department and across campus. This person will supervise a Graduate/Undergraduate Assistant and manage two upper class residential areas. The Area Coordinator will supervise the desk assistant staff and their payroll. This is a live on position.

Responsibilities:

  1. (E) Oversight of ~800 resident students in a residential building(s).
  2. (E) Supervise, train and manage a staff of 22 Resident Assistants.
  3. (E) Responsible for evaluating Resident Assistant performance in the assigned area and providing recommendations for the annual rehire process.
  4. (E) Responsible for the planning, organization, direction and budgeting of all resident student programming within the assigned residence hall(s).
  5. (E) Hold regular weekly office hours in building and attend Resident Assistant programs in order to be available and accessible to resident students.
  6. (E) Ability to demonstrate multicultural competence, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  7. (E) Acts as a student conduct hearing officer for the residence halls.
  8. (E) Respond to emergency situations as needed. Evaluate and alert University Police and other offices as necessary.
  9. (E) Facilitates conflict resolution between resident students.
  10. (E) Supervises Resident Assistant (RA) staff and 50 Desk Assistants (DA) staff, including time reporting and personnel record keeping as well as utilizing our When2Work software for tracking.
  11. (E) Supports the security of the residence halls and works to teach students personal responsibility within the residence halls.
  12. (E) Responsible for reporting daily repairs to custodial/maintenance staff through SchoolDude.
  13. (E) Work to ensure the proper opening and closing of all residence hall facilities, room assignments, maintenance, damage billing and residence hall orientation.
  14. (E) Participates in the on-site hosting of the summer conference programs.
  15. (E) Participates in a rotating, on-call weekend and evening duty system, including all Holidays and breaks.
  16. (E) Maintain on campus presence a minimum of two weekends per month.
  17. (E) Serves as the Residence Life on-call access manager while participating in a rotating, on-call weekend and evening duty system.
  18. (E) Serves on various departmental and university committees, as approved by the supervisor.
  19. (E) Assists with departmental processes such as Staff Selection, RA Development and Evaluation, Room Selection, Desk Assistants, etc. This position is responsible to lead one of the above processes.
  20. (E) Accountable for ensuring that affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions in areas of responsibility.
  21. Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  22. Performs other duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Completed Bachelor's degree, Masters preferred.. Preference will be given to those individuals with one year or more of Post-Baccalaureate experience as a live-in staff member.
  • Demonstrated previous supervisory and administrative experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with education, cultural and recreational programming.
  • Demonstrated experience with staff training theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion, especially pertaining to issues in higher education, and an understanding of college student engagement and creating learning outcomes.
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflicts and crises.
  • Demonstrated awareness/sensitivity toward issues pertaining to Affirmative Action and non-discrimination.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm annual salary for this position is $50,000.
