Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Trumpet

The School of Music at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Trumpet position starting August 15, 2024. The ideal candidate is an accomplished artist-teacher with a collaborative mindset and a strong commitment to creative, inclusive teaching practices. An earned doctorate is preferred; commensurate experience will be considered.

Please note that the Penn State School of Music is also seeking an Assistant Professor of Piano and an Assistant Professor of Voice. For all three positions, we seek inspiring new colleagues who will, together, help us view musical performance, teaching, and learning in diverse ways. We welcome applicants from the widest variety of pedagogical, educational, and musical backgrounds and styles.

For this trumpet position, please use your cover letter to address the points below. Feel free to define yourself and your creative practice in ways that let us envision the unique qualifications you would bring to the Penn State School of Music experience.

We seek an applicant who will maintain an active regional, national, and international performance profile, and develop a creative and scholarly agenda appropriate to an R-1 university tenure-track position. The successful candidate will have ideas for cultivating a vibrant, diverse musical population in our School, and has an innovative plan for recruiting undergraduates and graduate students from international, national, state, and local circles. The ability to nurture a supportive studio community is essential. The successful candidate will have a keen sense of responsibility to community outreach and will be willing to make a substantial investment in local and state musical activities. The position requires university service duties appropriate to a tenure-track assistant professor. The College of Arts & Architecture is working to establish a culture of anti-racism and anti-oppression that embraces individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity through curricula, values, standards, ideals, policies and practices. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of their experience with, and interest in, contributing to these goals. Address in your cover letter how equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging relate to your research, creative activity, and/or service experience. Current faculty and administration share an ethic of collegial responsibility and mutual care, so this new hire will receive solid mentoring, professional development, and support.

This position requires the candidate to do advanced graduate teaching and solid, thoughtful undergraduate pedagogy. Instructional duties may include (but are not limited to) studio teaching for majors and non-majors, chamber music coaching, repertoire class, brass pedagogy, trumpet methods, jazz teaching, and/or other courses in the candidate's unique areas of expertise.

To apply, upload the following items:
  • Cover letter
  • CV
  • Names and contact information for three professional references
  • Links to 30 minutes of recent performance recordings
  • A one-page teaching statement on your approaches to pedagogical methods and viewpoints

The following clearances must be successfully completed for this position:
  • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check

Screening of applications will begin on December 15th and will continue until the position is filled. Upon request, candidates should be prepared to submit additional materials documenting teaching effectiveness. Questions may be directed to Wanda Hockenberry, Assistant to the Director, wgs1@psu.edu.
