Visual and Studio Arts in Painting - Half-Time Tenure Line

Rank: Undefined
Tenure Information: Tenure Track

Job Description
The Visual and Studio Arts program at Sarah Lawrence College requests applications for a half-time, tenure-line appointment in painting.
Students are undergraduate liberal arts candidates and may have varying experience in art studio. A half-time faculty member would design and teach one five-hour studio class to a maximum of fifteen students each semester and one shorter, two-hour concepts class with a maximum of twenty students once each year.
As part of this course work, faculty supervises each student in a semester-long independent project or “conference work”, a hallmark of the Sarah Lawrence educational system. Outside of teaching, this faculty member would also take on some responsibilities of student advising and service.
Candidates should have a strong exhibition record, experience teaching at the college or university level or its equivalent, and should be able to teach both beginning and intermediate classes in painting through a wide range of perspectives. A belief in the importance of equity, justice and engagement underlies the program's core understanding of the present moment in art and society. Please be sure to address your strategies for creating an inclusive classroom in your teaching philosophy.
Applications should include the following: cover letter, CV or resume, a statement describing your teaching philosophy, a link to or .pdf portfolio of ten to twenty examples of recent work, a link to or .pdf portfolio of ten to twenty examples of student work, a course description for a beginning painting course, a course description for an intermediate or advanced painting course, and one idea for an interdisciplinary course that opens painting to another studio discipline (such as drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video art, or computation). Include the names and contact information for three references, but do not send actual letters of reference at this time.
In a commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment, applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Application review will begin on January 15, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
Compensation listed for this position will be contingent on teaching experience.
