ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH

We invite eligible applicants to apply for the position of Associate Dean, Office of Research, in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Candidates must be eligible to hold the rank of Professor in an area closely aligned with the College of ACES academic units.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY, COLLEGE, AND DEPARTMENTS                   

Join our team of more than 185 tenure-system faculty members; nearly 1,300 academic professionals, civil service staff and assistants; 2,674 undergraduates; and 755 graduate students in the College of ACES. Personnel in ACES play key roles in national and international research initiatives in bioenergy, biotechnology, integrated landscapes, environmental sustainability, food and agricultural systems, global climate change, family resiliency, public policy, and more. 

Annual expenditures of the College from all sources are more than $168 million, with approximately $72 million of that amount in support of research activities. The diverse sources of funding for current faculty research include NIH, NSF, USDA, USAID, DOE, EPA, State of Illinois, industry, and private organizations.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus (illinois.edu) has a student enrollment of over 56,000, and nearly 2,000 tenured/tenure-track faculty members. The College of ACES is home to seven academic departments, ranging from Agricultural and Biological Engineering to Human Development and Family Studies. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology; Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment; Prairie Research Institute; and the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, among several others.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Professor and Associate Dean, Office of Research is a full-time (100% FTE) administrative position in the College of ACES at the University of Illinois. This position is responsible for the leadership and administrative oversight of the research programs of the College of ACES and serves as Director of the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station. Specifically, the Associate Dean for Research’s responsibilities are:

 

  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic planning for research and scholarly activities associated with the breadth of disciplines within the College of ACES; Develop new research capacity and associated infrastructure to support the college with addressing grand challenges in agricultural, consumer and environmental sciences; Stimulate formation of innovative research ideas in the College of ACES and promote the translation of research discoveries into practice by communicating research outcomes to teaching faculty and Extension field staff; Facilitate the expansion of faculty excellence in research by building inter- and trans- disciplinary teams within the college, across the university and with other universities, both nationally and internationally as appropriate for the targeted funding source; Facilitate constructive relationships with internal and external scientific communities, industry partners, key stakeholders, corporations, non-profit organizations, and foundations, state and federal government representatives, and others to garner support for and to champion research within the College; Provide leadership for the creation and development of large research teams, including engagement with campus research institutes, to advance emerging and innovative discovery; Actively participate and represent College of ACES, Office of Research in state and national meetings to further the College’s research objectives and new initiatives. Participate as a member of the ACES Executive Administrative Team in college-level decision making, serve in an advisory capacity to the dean concerning resource allocation, promotion and tenure, sabbatical leave, strategic planning, program prioritization, responses to university level requests and initiatives, and create and manage college college-level initiatives; Lead and provide direction for all aspects of the College of ACES, Office of Research to utilize and invest Office of Research resources to advance scholarship, elevate the visibility of the College and maximize impact of research outcomes at the regional, national and international levels; Provide administrative leadership for the management of fiscal and human resources of the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station and the Office of Research; Supervise capital planning, space renovations and allocations, and safety processes for the College; Develop and deliver professional development opportunities in research-related activities for faculty and staff; and Comply with Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity and Access policies and guidelines in commitment to achieving a diverse workforce.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field of study, be eligible to hold a current University of Illinois tenured faculty appointment at the rank of full professor, and qualify for a tenured faculty appointment in an academic department of the College of ACES. Strongly desired qualifications include a recognized national and international scholarly reputation, demonstrated leadership and administrative skills and experience, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, an understanding of the broad mission of a land grant university, acknowledgement of the importance of diverse disciplines represented by ACES research programs, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access and belonging (DEIAB).

 

SALARY

Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
