Associate Director for Business Engagement

Salary:

Minimum $100,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The typical starting salary for this position is $100,000 - $139,000 depending on qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $100,000 to $181,200. Job Summary:

Reporting to the L&S Associate Dean for Research, you will join the newly created Collective for Research Impact and Social Partnerships (CRISP) in the College of Letters and Science, an outward-looking team of collaborative, creative professionals working to enhance the impact of the College research on industry, security, policy, and communities well-being. In this position you will develop strategies to create and manage mutually beneficial partnerships with private-sector companies. These comprehensive relationships will include, but are not limited to, research partnerships, sponsorship opportunities, philanthropy, executive education, talent development/acquisition, and technology transfer.

You will work with the leadership of the College to identify research groups aligned with partners, to educate PIs on industry's needs and culture, holding a de facto role of "matchmaker". Given the current strengths of the College, the role will have a focus on developing relationships with the chemical & pharmaceutical; energy, quantum, fusion, and physical sciences; life sciences, and biotechnology sectors. Despite this focus, the person in this position will be open and alert to the very many opportunities across the largest College on campus (including in the Social Sciences). This position works independently, with the Associate Dean for Research, and will also regularly interact with the Office of Business Engagement, WARF, SuccessWorks, and other partners on campus who will support your efforts.

Success in this role will be measured through quantitative outcomes, such as revenue generation and the creation of new partnerships; and qualitative outcomes, such as internal and external partner satisfaction, in line with the role's overarching aim to create long-term, sustainable partnerships for the College with industry. After an extended onboarding period of 3-6 months, you will enjoy the greater workplace flexibility that comes with greater familiarity in the role. Responsibilities: Assists in the development and implementation of innovative, creative promotional campaigns and strategy in alignment with corporate and foundation-related institutional strategic goals. Represents the school or unit to internal and external stakeholders and contributes to the supervision of unit staff.
  • 40% Serves as a key unit authority to identify cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective and existing members and donors to support growth in line with the unit vision and values
  • 20% Directs strategic planning pertaining to growth initiatives and establishes unit objectives in alignment with the strategic plan
  • 15% Leads the development and execution of cross-unit communications strategies and promotional campaigns and materials to align with institutional initiatives
  • 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Works with the leadership of the College to identify alignments between community partner's interests and research groups in the College
  • 5% Holds meetings and events with faculty, staff, and students to raise the awareness of research groups and promote community collaboration
  • 5% Identifies and cultivates a robust pipeline of target partners to align with college and University goals, and continuously evaluates potential opportunities for engagement
  • 5% Facilitates productive meetings between partners and PIs
Tasks:

Program Development (75%):
  • Creates and directs faculty-focused programs, events, and efforts to foster industry engaged research in the College.
  • Creates a "College map" of those who wish to work, or are currently working, on industry research.
  • Works with the Office of Business Engagement, WARF, SuccessWorks, and other partners on campus to establish relationships with industry partners.
  • Collaborates with faculty, academic staff and industry partners to support interdisciplinary research programs by making connections between individuals, units, and industry.
  • Works with the Director of Foundation Relations and the Associate Dean for Research to seek potential foundations as partners, when appropriate.
  • Is knowledgeable, understands campus resources and works with the Associate Dean for Research to help active projects find the appropriate needed infrastructure to carry out the research.
  • Develops a list of potential resources for research projects, including graduate students who can be hired to help draft policy, potential project managers, etc.
  • Works with the College office of Research Services and the Business Office to streamline administrative processes needed for successful, industry-based projects, following campus research policy.
  • Communicates with the Associate Director for Community-Engaged Research and the National Security Research Strategist to exchange ideas and best practices and to find potential collaborations.
Administration (25%):
  • Works with the College IT team to develop a partnership tracking database designed to facilitate industry access to university expertise. Oversees the database.
  • Assists CRISP in the development of a website and other communications.
  • Plans and directs staff implementation of outreach events, programs, and other events, with the aim of maintaining fluid communication with industry partners.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience that provides knowledge of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, energy, geoscience, or other industries related to physical and/or natural sciences
- Demonstrated success in a business development, complex solution sales or technical sales role or equivalent
- Ability and interest in developing and sustaining collaborative relationships with professors, researchers, and university administration internally, as well as business executives and private-sector professionals externally
- Demonstrated self-directed project planning and execution skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and comfort with speaking publicly in small-to-medium-sized forums
- Higher education experience and/or an understanding of differences between higher education and private-sector processes and governance
- A record of success as an innovative and curious thinker with a solution-based focus
- Ability to think and act strategically, and deliver results without having direct authority over entities and individuals who share responsibility for these activities and who must be partners in these efforts in order to achieve successful results. This position helps facilitate the success of others, and thereby, the success of the college, university, state, industry, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing multi-stakeholder partnerships or strategic account relationships
- An educational or applied background in the physical, biological, or life sciences
- Experience in and/or an understanding in public-private partnership (P3) models and cross-sector partnerships
