Summary/Objective

Communications Specialist will play a pivotal role in crafting and executing communication strategies to enhance our organization's visibility and reputation. The incumbent will have expertise in written and verbal communication, along with creativity, and will be crucial in helping effectively convey PERIL messages to internal and external stakeholders.
The position will collaboratively work with project managers, receiving tasks and following project goals/vision while helping to align those goals with digitally based resources. This role requires active up-management of staff to create and maintain a schedule in keeping with larger project timelines. Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills are needed to be successful in this role

Essential Functions
  1. Content Creation and Management:Develop engaging and informative content for various communication channels, including newsletters, press releases, websites, and social media. Manage and maintain content calendars to ensure a consistent and timely delivery of communication materials.
  2. Internal Communications: Facilitate clear and transparent communication within the organization. Assist in creating and disseminating internal announcements, updates, and newsletters to keep employees informed and engaged. Work with Front-End Web Developer to discuss content, improvements, accessibility, etc.
  3. Social Media Management: Create and curate compelling content for our social media platforms. Monitor and analyze social media performance, making data-driven recommendations for improvements. Oversee and manage listserv email lists.
  4. Event Coordination:Support the planning and executing of events, webinars, and conferences, ensuring effective communication before, during, and after events. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop event- related materials and messaging.
  5. Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned to support PERIL’s strategic mission and goals.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • Part-Time, Flexible Hours (up to 20 hours a week).
  • Exempt.

  • Hybrid 2 Schedule – two days in the office, three days remote work.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Advance written and verbal communication skills. Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in using communication tools and platforms, including social media management tools and content m anagement systems, and experience in graphic design software.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Creative thinking and the ability to adapt communication strategies to changing circumstances.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Ability to work with WordPress custom templating.
  • SEO and Analytics.
  • Digital project management.

  • Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA and live in the DMV area.

  • Hiring offers for this position are contingent on successful completion of a background check.
  • Employees in staff positions at American University must deliver their services to the university from either the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia, or perform work on-site at the university.
