Assistant Professor

(Ref: 230003FG) (Closing date: January 31, 2024)

Founded in 1965, the Department of Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is the first degree-granting music department in Hong Kong. Our faculty members bring expertise across diverse areas of music study, actively engage in exceptional research supported by competitive grants, and publish in prestigious international venues. The Department is committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence and providing a comprehensive education for students at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.

The Department is inviting applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Music. We seek a dynamic, interdisciplinary scholar and teacher whose work engages with musics in/of China and/or the Sinophone world.

Applicants should have: (i) a PhD degree in music or a relevant field that engages music as a locus of scholarship, practice, and analysis; (ii) a record of outstanding publications and successful grant applications, or clear potential thereof; and (iii) a strong commitment to teach courses and conduct research related to musics in/of China and/or the Sinophone world, as well as in a secondary area (geographic and/or theoretical) that complements and expands existing faculty interests and the wider environment of scholarship and practice at CUHK.

The appointee is expected to enhance the Department's research and teaching profiles, and to contribute to the growth of interdisciplinary initiatives in and across the Department and the Faculty of Arts.

Duties include: (a) teaching two courses per semester at undergraduate/postgraduate levels; (b) conducting innovative research and securing research grants; (c) supervising student projects and postgraduate theses; and (d) assisting in administrative duties.

Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing August 2024, which, subject to performance and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit an online application via the CUHK e-Recruitment platform and upload a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, one writing example, and contact details of three referees to whom the applicants' consent has been given for providing references.

The University only accepts and considers applications submitted online for the post above. For more information and to apply online, please visit
