Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.

Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or post-doctoral fellow as well as semi-independent work, we are seeking a Research Technologist who will be responsible for laboratory research using established procedures and protocols. The position requires a basic understanding of molecular techniques required to carry out laboratory experiments, the ability to apply basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and identify situations needing special attention.

The research focus of the laboratory is on the assembly and morphogenesis of herpes viruses. Using recombinant baculovirus technology to produce virus-like particles for structural studies and proteomic analysis. Creating recombinant viruses tagged with fluorescent reporters (GFP) to visualize in real-time virus particle movement within cells and in neurons. New projects also focus on development of protein micro-arrays using a virion display method for human transmembrane proteins. In addition, in conjunction with the Synthetic Biology team at JCVI we are synthetic biology methods to assemble the large genomes of herpes viruses.




Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses molecular biology methods (cloning, PCR assays, mutagenesis), cell culture methods (transfections, virus infections, cell line maintenance), biochemical procedures (protein electrophoresis, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, protein purification, protein micro-array, immunofluorescence), recombinant herpes virus and baculovirus generation.
  • Applies analytical skills to implement assigned projects.
  • Maintains accurate and current data records.
  • Organizes and records plasmid constructs and stocks.
  • Maintains freezer stock and supply inventory.
  • Responsible for maintenance of lab and equipment.
  • Identifies and trouble-shoots methods and experimental procedures.
  • Exercises independent judgment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
