Job Description

The Missouri School of Journalism and Reynolds Journalism Institute invite candidates for a postdoctoral research fellowship in local news for a 24-month term-limited position beginning 8/19/2024. The researcher will join an ongoing initiative that, in collaboration with the MU Institute for Data Science & Informatics, is exploring community information needs and the provision of news in Missouri and around the country, and the development of scalable computational methods of local information ecosystem analysis.

Applications are welcome from scholars with demonstrated interest in local and rural news, information ecosystems, and news deserts. This position is an ideal opportunity for a scholar focusing on news media environments, critical information needs, rural broadband, news audiences, journalism studies, disruption in news ecosystems, social media and its role in journalism and society, and the value of news in everyday life.

The postdoctoral fellow will be able to help design the research roadmap and develop theoretical and applied outputs, including academic publication, public-facing scholarship via RJI’s distribution channels and network, or other industry publications. The fellow will also participate in external grant opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have developed strengths in mixed methods work and an interest in collaborating with experts in computational methods, including machine learning. The postdoctoral fellow will interact with an interdisciplinary range of faculty and students across the MU campus.

This will be a 100% research effort. Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to be in residence in Columbia, Missouri, no later than August 19, 2024.

Qualifications

Applicants must already have or will have earned a doctorate in journalism, communication, or a closely related field before starting the appointment in August 2024.
