Job Description:

OFFICIAL TITLE: Assistant Director, Senior Financial Accountant
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to Controller
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Ability to Supervise/Oversee Staff Associate, Staff Assistants, and Grants & Contract Accountant as appropriate.

General Statement of Duties: The Senior Financial Accountant performs analytical review and reconciliation procedures on financial information and transactional data, provides guidance and instruction to campus budget administrators at all levels, assists in preparation of monthly financial reports and annual financial statements, serves as power user for the accounting system for the University and performs key reconciliation processes within the accounting system.

  1. (E) Assist with monthly closing and related reporting as well as year-end financial statement processing including the annual audit.
  2. (E) Assist in financial statement preparation for annual reporting for the University.
  3. (E) Oversee monthly reconciliations and preparation of year-end entries.
  4. (E) Work with the external auditors in their annual audit of the University financial statements.
  5. (E) Assist in preparation of other State Required Reports.
  6. (E) Perform analytical procedures including investigation of unusual transactions or unexpected variances on monthly financial reports.
  7. (E) Prepare, approve, oversee and process Journal entries related to monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
  8. (E) Oversee general ledger account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations.
  9. (E) Analyze budget to actual reports and charts on a monthly, quarterly basis as needed.
  10. (E) Assist in maintaining electronic accounting information and serve as a power user for Colleague FMS system.
  11. (E) Assist with the management of Accounting and Treasury Operations.
  12. (E) Serve as a power user for SAP Business Objects- Webi Reports.
  13. (E) Assist in retrieving information and writing queries to produce special reports.
  14. (E) Assist in the investigation, documentation, and resolving system problems.
  15. (E) Assist in training Colleague FMS users on current system and new processes.
  16. (E) Assist in providing guidance on inquiries related to accounting system issues and processes of the General Accounting Staff.
  17. (E) Maintain best practices for accounting operations while driving and documenting process improvement and leveraging technology solutions where possible. Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
  18. (E) Provide support as needed to the Center for Operational Excellence.
  19. (E) Prepare ad-hoc reports for management and internal customers.
  20. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
  21. (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  22. (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years' experience or more years of increasingly responsible experience as a professional accountant or financial analyst, which includes budgeting and fiscal accounting and reporting experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate high skill levels in Excel Spreadsheets (Pivot Tables, Lookups etc.) and other tools for accounting, financial analysis and reporting, and to analyze complex financial and statistical data and determine their significance.
  • Ability to extract data from complex accounting, reporting and other systems and use Excel Spreadsheets and other tools for financial analysis.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial and statistical data and determine their significance. Experience in forecasting and analysis.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate fiscal and/or accounting activities and internal controls.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district administrators, faculty and staff.
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Governmental Financial Manager (CGFM), or Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or MBA.
  • Experience in higher education or non-profit preferred.
  • Supervisory experience, ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Strong analytical, organization and problem-solving skills.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm annual salary range for this position is $85,000- $90,000, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education.
