The College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA) at the University of Texas at San Antonio seeks to hire an Associate Dean for Community Engagement/Executive Director of UTSA Arts and Full Professor with tenure. We seek an established artist across a variety of fields of creative expression including creative writing, dance, performance art, theater, visual art or music with a substantive record of community-engaged artistic activity and ability to advocate for and uplift a broad array of creative expression. The ideal candidate will have a vision for inspiring creativity and leveraging community assets within a dynamic, multi-cultural arts ecosystem. San Antonio is the cultural capital of Texas with a unique blend of creative expression and a rich array of cultural organizations in support of the broader arts scene. The ideal candidate will have the ability to engage broadly and authentically across the multiple strata of creative expression within the city and in the South Texas region. UTSA is emerging as a significant engine for the arts across multiple media. The ideal candidate will have the ability to bring people together and rally support for emerging academic programs in film and media, dance, creative writing, new media, performance art, and commercial music. UTSA is home to significant community arts programming across the spectrum of creative expression including young artist and community adult art education programming at its Southwest Campus, summer music camps, concerts and major productions throughout the city, and major art exhibitions at galleries on the Main and the Southwest campuses. The ideal candidate will have leadership skills to bring these activities together as one cohesive whole under the aegis of UTSA Arts and to make the words “UTSA Arts” synonymous with community arts activities of the highest caliber among the residents of San Antonio and the greater South Texas region.
This position is central to COLFA’s vision of “recommitting to arts education” and demonstrating to San Antonio and the region the immense power of a dynamic arts enterprise at an urban-serving, Hispanic Thriving, R1 research university. The candidate will be housed in one of COLFA’s arts-oriented units including the School of Art, the School of Music, the Department of English, the Department of Modern Languages, the Department of Communication, the Department of Philosophy and Classics or the Interdisciplinary School for Engagement. As part of the COLFA leadership team, the new Associate Dean will serve alongside three additional Associate Deans (Graduate Studies and Research, Undergraduate Studies, Curriculum and Assessment, and Faculty Affairs) and other college staff including the Assistant Dean for Fiscal Administration, the Assistant Dean for Faculty Success, the Director of the Student Success Center, the Associate Director for Communications, and the College Administrative Service Officer.
