The Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a tenure-line West African Dance position beginning August of 2024. The Department seeks an individual with a commitment to collaborative discourse, interdisciplinary inquiry, and entrepreneurial learning practices to work in our BFA /BA/BS dance programs. We are seeking a colleague to join our vibrant community and be a part of our innovative and collaborative dance program where the faculty and staff foster the development of compassionate, inclusive, and empathetic artists and human beings. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in inclusive approaches in the areas of West African Dance, Dance History, and related dance technique courses while serving as a leader in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging ( DEIB ) efforts within the Department, College, and University. The ideal candidate should foster teaching practices that align with the mission and strategic plans of the university, college, and department. Applicants should also be committed to inclusive pedagogies in their teaching, scholarship, and artistry.

Salary and benefit packages for this position are competitive, with salaries for this opportunity beginning at $53,000 annually.

Our dynamic faculty function as collaborative, innovative, inclusive, and adaptive members of the College of Fine Arts community, both within and beyond the home unit, serving as quality teachers, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, engaged in public service activities, and contributing to the Ball State and Muncie communities and beyond. Additionally, lifelong learning at Ball State University extends educational engagement beyond the classroom and includes learning for professional development, personal enrichment, or other goals throughout one’s lifetime. Faculty will be expected to participate in the department’s, college’s, and university’s lifelong learning opportunities when available and may be assigned teaching responsibility in this area as part of their overall responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • A teaching load that may include all levels of course work in West African dance, art of storytelling, dance history, worlds of dance, and introduction to dance;
  • The ideal candidate will also have expertise in at least two additional technique areas including, but not limited to, hip hop, commercial, yoga, jazz, tap, musical theatre dance, ballet, and/or somatics;
  • Play an active leadership role within the Department, College, and University’s efforts related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging ( DEIB ).
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the vision, design, and management of the Dance program
  • Supervision and mentoring of student choreographers in assigned productions;
  • A dedication and commitment to helping foster and cultivate overall student success;
  • Creation and execution of choreography for selected department productions;
  • Creating an active and tenure-worthy professional profile in the area of dance. This includes a balance of work in professional venues, scholarly activity, presentations at reputable theatre and dance conferences, and other related professional activities that benefit the candidate, University, Department, and students being served.
  • Fulfilling service obligations, including assigned committee work at the Department, College, and University level, on a national, regional, and local level.
  • Working in collaboration with theatre and dance faculty, staff, and students in facilitating the theatre and dance production program at Ball State University.
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in dance or related discipline or equivalent professional experience completed by date of employment or equivalent professional experience.
At least one semester of experience teaching students in a collegiate/university setting, gained concurrently or at any time.
Ability to teach all levels of West African dance and related global dance forms.
Expertise in the area of dance history and/or introduction to dance.
Expertise in at least two technique areas including, but not limited to, hip hop, commercial, yoga, jazz, tap, musical theatre dance, ballet, and/or somatics.
The ability to serve as a recruiter and advocate on a National level for the BFA Dance Program.

Authorization to work in the US

Employer will consider sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

M.F.A. in Dance completed by date of employment.
Three years of teaching experience at the university/college level.
Ability to serve as an artist for production work when needed.
Experience with professional organizations that champion DEIB initiatives and programs.
