Department Summary

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health and the University of Oregon Intercollegiate Athletic Department have partnered to address the mental health needs of student-athletes across the developmental spectrum from K-12 through undergraduate levels of education.

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon Portland establishes a new national model for behavioral healthcare for children and families by creating the nation's first undergraduate program in child behavioral health. The institute prioritizes the needs of youth who have been historically or persistently underserved and seeks to make real system change by creating a new mental health profession that addresses existing barriers and gaps in mental health services, delivering support in schools and the community, training existing youth-serving professionals, developing new approaches to support child behavioral health, and transforming the Pacific Northwest into a national model of thought and action. Launched in March 2022, this groundbreaking institute was made possible by an extraordinary gift from Connie and Steve Ballmer, co-founders of Ballmer Group Philanthropy.

The University of Oregon Intercollegiate Athletic Department's primary purpose is to provide a unique opportunity for student-athletes to be developed, tested, and encouraged to reach their maximum potential in every aspect of their lives. It is the steadfast goal of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to provide the most outstanding student-athlete experience by helping them to achieve excellence, both in the classroom and in their chosen sport. The department has approximately 250 administrative & classified employees and hosts over 600,000 spectators annually and represents the University of Oregon in athletic competition with other universities & colleges.

Position Summary

Clinical professor faculty (assistant, associate, or professor rank) engaged in the externally funded UO Athletics-Ballmer Institute partnership will be integral partners in the development, testing, and evaluation of innovative programming for student-athletes across the developmental spectrum, from K-12 through undergraduate levels of higher education.

Clinical professor faculty will spend 50% of their time dedicated to researching, creating, and refining a new service delivery model focused on mental health promotion and prevention for student-athletes across the developmental spectrum. Dr. Katie McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Ballmer Institute, and Dr. Craig Davidson, Director of Athletic Medicine will co-direct research activities that support this new model.

Clinical professor faculty in the Ballmer Institute will spend the remainder of their time working under the direction of the Director of Child Behavioral Health Training. Working closely with clinical faculty in the Ballmer Institute, this position will develop and deliver a self-care curriculum to promote wellness among students in the child behavioral health training program. Clinical professor faculty must work exceptionally well with students of color, LGBTQ+ students, international students, and other underrepresented students and communities on campus.

This position is based in Portland, Oregon. As a 9-month Career Faculty position, the clinical faculty's responsibilities are guided by the United Academics Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health's Career and Limited Duration Faculty Review and Promotion Policy.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the rank of Assistant Clinical Professor:

• Doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or related behavioral health field
  
• Current Oregon professional license by start date in clinical psychology, school psychology, counseling psychology, social work, or a related mental health field
  
  To be considered for the rank of Associate Clinical Professor, candidates must meet the above qualifications +6 years of experience, post advanced degree, that aligns with the Institute's promotion policy that includes significant contributions across standard university faculty activities such as teaching; scholarship, research, or creative activity; service activities; administrative duties; and commitment to the profession.
  
  To be considered for the rank of Clinical Professor, candidates must meet the above qualifications +12 years of experience, post advanced degree, that aligns with the Institute's promotion policy that includes significant contributions across standard university faculty activities such as teaching; scholarship, research, or creative activity; service activities; administrative duties; and commitment to the profession.
  
  Professional Competencies
  
  
• Ability to contribute to the Ballmer Institute through their understanding of the barriers facing students from historically and persistently underserved communities, students of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and members of groups underrepresented in higher education, as evidenced by life experiences, professional credentials, and educational background
  
• Expertise in delivering evidence-based behavioral health promotion, prevention, and intervention for common behavioral health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and trauma
  
• Competency in collaborating with other professionals to meet client/student/institutional behavioral health needs
  
• Competency in working with clients/students/colleagues/families of various backgrounds
  
• Competency in addressing the systemic, societal/institutional factors that produce disparities in child/adolescent behavioral health
  
• Maintain a professional Oregon practice license in an area aligned with training
  
  Preferred Qualifications
  
  
• Experience developing and/or delivering behavioral health promotion and prevention programs
  
• Experience with digital tools to enhance behavioral health intervention adherence and outcomes
