Temporary Research Assistant

About the Opportunity

We have an immediate need for a temporary research assistant to support our program evaluation research study in collaboration with the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) in the area of early childhood mental health (ECMH). We are currently running a pilot study to collect data for a new grant proposal. The new project will seek to develop a smartphone app that can be used by families involved with BPHC to assist in care navigation and improve communication with the family partners they work with. We are conducting dyad interviews with caregivers and family partners to get their feedback on what would be beneficial to incorporate into an app. The primary focus of the Research Assistant (RA) will be to conduct these interviews in Spanish with caregivers and family partners, as well as to assist in translation of interviews and written materials.

Project Overview:

The current study aims to assess the effectiveness of an intervention designed to identify and support families facing vulnerabilities to development of social, emotional, and/or behavioral problems among their young children, currently either in the foster care system or who are receiving home visiting services. The original model was recognized as a Best Practice by the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) in 2020. This work is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) via a subcontract from the Boston Public Health Commission, the Northeastern Community-to-Community Impact Engine, and the Northeastern Center for Design.

The Research Assistant will participate in the following activities:
  • Administer qualitative key informant interviews, primarily in Spanish, with program participants using Zoom.
  • Ensure quality assurance of transcripts resulting from the interviews.
  • Translate transcripts from Spanish to English.
  • Work with flexibility for virtual interviewing during hours when families are available.

The RA is expected to work 5-10 hours per week until the interviews and quality control reviews are completed.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Qualitative Data Collection: Conduct qualitative interviews in Spanish with study participants, ensuring a respectful and culturally sensitive approach.
  • Data Management: Assist in organizing and managing research data, including transcription and translation of interviews, coding, and data entry.
  • Research Support: Engage in literature reviews, online research, and resource cataloging related to the ECMH FIRST project.
  • Communication: Maintain regular contact with research participants, coordinate interview schedules, and facilitate communication with the project team.
  • Documentation: Keep detailed records of interview sessions, data collection procedures, and participant consent forms.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the research team to ensure the successful execution of the project, attend project meetings, and provide input on research protocols.
  • Reporting: Assist in preparing data reports and summaries for project evaluation and analysis.

Qualifications:
  • Fluency in Spanish: Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish is essential for conducting interviews and working with Spanish-speaking participants.
  • Research Interest: Strong interest in qualitative research and a willingness to learn and adapt to research methodologies.
  • Excellent Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with research participants and team members.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills and a keen eye for detail in data management and documentation.
  • Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a research team and contribute positively to team dynamics.
  • Computer Skills: Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and research software is a plus.
