The University of Missouri St. Louis - Center for Behavioral Health

Job Description

The University of Missouri St. Louis - Center for Behavioral Health is among the largest psychological assessment practices in Missouri and is considered to be the primary provider of psychological evaluation services in the St. Louis region. For over 40 years, we have provided comprehensive, high-quality assessments to some of the most underserved members of our community. The Center maintains strong referral relationships with more than 60 community partners including state agencies, school districts, outpatient and inpatient mental health facilities, and primary care providers.

The UMSL Center for Behavioral Health has offered postdoctoral fellowship training experiences for over fifteen years. It is a point of pride for CBH to train future generations of psychologists in cutting edge assessment approaches and gold standard interventions. CBH fellows develop considerable professional skills. Alumni of the fellowship have gone on to hold positions in many settings including medical schools, other academic settings, counseling centers, inpatient facilities, and outpatient mental health centers, including CBH. Being housed at a university, the training environment is rich. In addition to the postdoctoral fellowship, CBH trains graduate students and psychology interns from APA-accredited training programs. Fellows have access to many resources including the university’s library system and an extensive in-house assessment library with hundreds of measures. Further, fellows participate in trainings offered by seasoned psychologists at our Center and by other experts in the local and national communities.

Postdoctoral fellows at CBH conduct a wide variety of evaluations and provide outpatient therapy services to children, adolescents, and/or adults. Assessments include comprehensive evaluations of children, adolescents, and adults with severe emotional or psychiatric disturbances, forensic parenting competency evaluations, violence risk assessments, psychosexual evaluations, and evaluations of learning and attention disorders. Our clients come from urban, suburban, and rural areas, making the postdoctoral fellowship abundant in opportunities to work with diverse populations.

The Center aims to stay at the forefront of assessment practice. The Therapeutic Assessment (TA) model informs the approach taken to evaluations at CBH and postdoctoral fellows have the opportunity to learn and practice it. CBH brought this model to the St. Louis area in 2015 when it began sponsoring trainings in TA by faculty of the Therapeutic Assessment Institute in Austin, TX. This collaboration also resulted in an article on the topic of incorporating TA into community clinics. Other specialties represented at the Center by faculty and staff psychologists include autism, gender identity, trauma, and evaluations of those who are court-involved, and fellows benefit from this knowledge through supervision and in-house grand rounds and other trainings. Further, should the fellow wish, CBH offers a specialty rotation in these areas mentioned. A generalist training experience is also available
