We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model that includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM’s work to advance medicine and improve the human condition.



The Executive Director of Development for Women’s and Children’s Health is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the development programs for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. This development team, collectively known as the Women’s and Children’s Health (WCH) development team, is part of the Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations team and the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.




The Executive Director will plan, manage, and coordinate all private sector fundraising in support of the research, teaching, and patient care mission of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. This individual will provide operational oversight and is responsible for all aspects of philanthropy, including grateful patient engagement, the direct management of annual, major, and principal gift operations, data management, stewardship, development communications, and donor events. Combined, the overall fundraising goal averages $20 million annually.

The Executive Director will oversee a staff of approximately 13 individuals and is responsible for comprehensive development efforts leading to successful annual and campaign fundraising results. The Executive Director has a dual reporting relationship with the Pediatrician-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the Associate Vice President of Development of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

  1. Partner with the Pediatrician-in-Chief, Pediatric Surgeon-in-Chief, and Associate Vice President to create a development vision and strategy for the Children’s Center that will meet the annual fundraising goals and capital campaign goals and increase fundraising results.
  2. Lead planning for and implementation of the next capital campaign for the Children’s Center, anticipated to launch publicly in approximately 2025.
  3. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and patient care components of the Children’s Center.
  4. Articulate fundraising priorities, goals, and objectives. Develop an annual and long-range operating plan to allow for implementation of the vision and strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health.
  5. Plan, implement, and manage a principal and major gift fund-raising program to meet departmental priorities as identified below:
    • Create annual fundraising work plans for individual fundraisers and the team that includes fundraising goals and targets for proposals to be presented, faculty referrals, and visits planned, per institutional standards.
    • Maintain an active portfolio of approximately 50 prospects and engage directly in major and principal gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, foundations, and corporations.
    • Schedule and arrange on-site and off-site meetings and cultivation/-recognition events such as research presentations, chair and laboratory dedications, cultivation and stewardship visits with faculty and the major gift donors and prospects; develop agendas and coordinate the participation of faculty, administration leaders, trustees, and volunteers.
    • Prepare and direct preparation of principal and major gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other cultivation materials and stewardship information for major gift prospects and donors.
    • Identify, enlist, motivate, guide, and support volunteers and trustees for participation in major solicitations.
    • Provide education and training to faculty and volunteers about the dynamics of major gift fundraising.
  6. Oversee the Director of Development for the Children’s Center, who manages a team of up to 4 gift officers. Working directly with the Executive Director, the Director manages and implements private-sector fundraising for the Children’s Center and Department of Pediatrics which raises over $15M annually.
  7. Oversee the Sr. Associate Director of Development, Gynecology and Obstetrics, who has a dual reporting relationship to the Executive Director and the Director of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. The Sr. Associate Director manages an assistant director. The Sr. Associate Director, under the supervision of the Ex. Director is responsible for creating and executing the development vision and strategy for GYN/OB that will meet the annual fundraising goals and capital campaign goals and increase fundraising results. The Ex. Director will supervise and partner with the Sr. Associate Director on a strategy to grow Gynecology and Obstetrics service line fundraising efforts into the National Capital Region (NCR).
  8. Oversee the Director of Corporate Relations and a team that is responsible for Children’s Miracle Network partnerships, fundraising, and events as well as general corporate partnerships. Sr. Director supervises and advises on overall strategies for programs, including the Corporate Advisory Board.
  9. Oversee and manage the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Council, a group of high net-worth donors and prospects charged with advocating for the Children’s Center and helping to secure philanthropic support.
  10. Maintain strong relationships with members of the Harriet Lane, Garrett, and Eudowood Boards which are supporting boards that manage their own funds, appoint new members, and set the agendas for their meetings. The Ex. Director of Development will attend board meetings as needed.
  11. Coordinate public relations strategy and program development for donors and prospects in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Director of Marketing and Communications for the Children’s Center. Maintain collateral materials, provide updated content for the website, create donor e-newsletter, and develop awareness building videos and social media content related to fundraising.
  12. Oversee strategy for and execution by a team of all fundraising and stewardship special events for the Children’s Center.
  13. The Ex. Director is a member of the Pediatrician-in-Chief’s leadership team, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine management team, and the Development and Alumni Relations management team and serves on other leadership committees as needed.
  14. Collaborate with Johns Hopkins All Children’s Foundation leadership to create joint fundraising opportunities and initiatives that span health system-wide, and share best practices among teams.
  15. Coordinate access and utilization of Central resources such as gift planning, principal prospects, and trustee support and research. Partner with development colleagues on donors/prospects with multiple affiliations.
  16. The incumbent will supervise and lead a team consisting of a combination of individual fundraisers, corporate fundraisers, operations staff, and administrative staff. Provide guidance, direction, and motivation to retain and nurture superior talent.
  17. Prepare and manage the budget for the Women’s and Children’s Health development office.
  18. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Ten years related professional experience including three years supervising professional level staff.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree preferred. Progressively responsible experience in major and principal gifts development, preferably in medicine, with a proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts, ideally in a complex, multi-divisional organization.
  • Management experience in a ‘pro-active’ organizational environment and an ability to lead by example.
  • Superb major gift ability with a solid track record of securing six and seven-figure gifts. Experience identifying and securing planned gifts preferred.
  • The intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, humor and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of the Chairs and faculty, chief development officers at FJHM, development staff, development colleagues, volunteers, trustees, and other constituents.
  • Ability to work within a complex, multi-divisional and multi-departmental environment to establish priorities, set objectives and achieve stated goals.
  • Superlative interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, across a diverse range of educational and social backgrounds and to demonstrate an honest respect for each individual.
  • A broad understanding of multi-faceted campaign planning, implementation and management.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; the ability to articulate and translate eloquently, the complex goals, mission and aspirations of the program for all audiences.
  • Ability to mentor and manage development professional and administrative staff. Willingness and ability to travel.
  • A strong desire to associate with the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and to champion the mission of the Children’s Center and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
