Des Moines University invites nominations and expressions of interest in the Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM).  Reporting to the president, the dean will have a significant record of achievement and will provide leadership for COM’s medical, clinical and research programs.

Founded in 1898, DMU is a premier medical and health sciences institution comprising three colleges offering 10 graduate degrees. The programs share a collective strength — a collaborative campus community where students and faculty unite to pursue knowledge and innovation. DMU’s strong reputation in medicine and health sciences is built on the commitment of its faculty who are passionate about training tomorrow’s health care heroes with unmatched dedication and uncompromised intention.

DMU’s state-of-the-art campus in West Des Moines, Iowa, opened in 2023. The new facilities cater to the evolving needs of students and faculty, fostering an exceptional learning and research environment. The campus offers a perfect blend of academic excellence and access to the thriving community of the Greater Des Moines area, including cultural attractions, dining and entertainment options. The college has more than 800 D.O. students, making it the university’s largest college. DMU has 1,500 students across all three colleges.

The dean will oversee curriculum, planning, budget management and development of policies to promote the growth of COM’s programs. The successful candidate will engage with students, faculty, staff, alumni and the local community to advance COM’s mission. The university seeks an engaging, inspiring, and collaborative leader who is a highly effective administrator in delivering education, research and service programming. The dean is responsible for providing collaborative and consultative academic leadership for all matters within the college. The dean also oversees all programs within COM, including curriculum, planning and management of the operating budget. The successful candidate will be charged with developing and implementing an ambitious medical, clinical and research enterprise, with an increased focus on clinical practice opportunities and interdisciplinary research.

Candidates must hold a D.O. degree from a COCA-accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine (Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation) and be qualified by education, training and experience to provide effective leadership in education, scholarly activity and patient care. Successful applicants possess a medical license and board certification (at some point in the candidate’s career) and at least five years of experience in academic leadership roles that include budget management authority. Demonstrated success in previous administrative, chair or educational leadership roles and excellence in clinical training and patient care are desired.
