Position Function:

The Department of Biological Sciences at Mississippi State University has Assistant Teaching Professor positions available. Assistant Teaching Professors are teaching-specific roles with no direct research responsibility. These positions are eligible for promotion dependent on experience and effectiveness. All Assistant Teaching Professors are full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track positions.

Department Profile:

The Department of Biological Sciences provides in-house research infrastructure including new imaging and high-performance computing resources. Core facilities within the department also include a BSL-2 AALAC-accredited animal care facility, a forest reserve, and common-use molecular and imaging facilities. The department also houses the Mississippi State University herbarium (MISSA), which is part of a campus-wide museums and galleries group (www.museums.msstate.edu).

The department offers B.S. (Biological Sciences, Medical Technology, and Microbiology), M.S., and Ph.D. (Biological Sciences, Computational Biology) degrees. Faculty in the department have diverse research interests in bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, microbiology, and systematics, and have been recently funded by a variety of agencies including NIH, NSF (including four current CAREER awards), DOE, DARPA, USDA, USDT, and DOJ, as well as state and private organizations. Biology faculty interact with other campus research centers and institutes (www.research.msstate.edu/centers-institutes) and have ongoing collaborations involving all eight of the university’s colleges.

Within a short drive of Starkville are more than 120,000 acres of state and federal natural areas, with abundant opportunities for research and recreation. This includes the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/sam-d-hamilton-noxubee), and the Tombigbee National Forest. We are Mississippi’s land-grant institution and principal research university with an enrollment of 23,000 students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching opportunities are wide-ranging throughout our curriculum and include non-majors courses in Animal Biology and Anatomy & Physiology as well as courses for our introductory Biology sequence for majors, and other more advanced majors courses including Animal Diversity, Human Anatomy, Vertebrate Histology, Comparative Anatomy, General Microbiology, Pathogenic Microbiology, Parasitology, Bacterial Physiology, or other courses fitting the applicant’s interest and the department’s need. Duties may include courses that have online components or are offered entirely online although the expectations are that these positions will be predominantly in face-to-face delivery formats. These assignments may also include preparing, coordinating, and supervising lab sections with the support of graduate teaching assistants. The opportunity to teach summer courses for additional pay may be available to meet student demand.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, instructional experience at the university or community college level, excellent communication and organizational skills, and familiarity with common instructional technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Multiple years of instructional experience at the university level. Preference will be given to candidates who use evidence-based teaching practices, have instructional design experience, are committed to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment, have taught a variety of courses, have experience coordinating teaching laboratories, and demonstrate excellence in teaching.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; strong organizational and computer skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
