Overview of Banquets Kitchen Manager

The Great Hall Events and Conference Center at Purdue University Northwest, Westville is seeking a Banquets Kitchen Manager to lead food service in our Banquet facility and work closely with our on-site food service/café team on our beautiful Westville, IN campus. Reporting to our Executive Director of Events Management, this position will play a key role in delivering quality food, providing our guests with an excellent experience while maintaining high service standards throughout the operation.

Located on PNW’s Westville Campus, the Great Hall is a modern, beautifully designed event venue situated within a picturesque setting. This versatile space meets the needs of weddings, showers and other private events, accommodating up to 300 guests. Beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto sweeping views of green landscape and sculptures, providing the perfect backdrop for gorgeous photos. Salary range: $50,000-$57,000

Duties and Responsibilities of Banquets Kitchen Manager
  • Manage the daily operations of The Great Hall Events and Conference Center's Food Service.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities food service, which includes event preparation, meticulous cleaning, and staffing coordination.
  • Position has flexibility in the work schedule based on the demands and fluctuations of the banquet operations, encompassing the ability to modify work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as necessitated by business requirements.
  • Provide leadership over the banquet kitchen and event production, including during evenings and weekends, in accordance with the venue's operational requirements.
  • Serve offsite catering, as needed. Support of on-site food service operations.
  • Provide support to the campus Gallery Café during low seasonality and/or in absence of café chef. Support Gallery Café in procurement planning and ordering.
  • Ensure Culinary Excellence by crafting and delivering exceptional meals and culinary creations that consistently meet and exceed guest expectations in terms of taste, presentation, and temperature.
  • Prepare food with attention to detail, adhering to the highest quality standards.
  • Meticulously prepare banquet event orders, ensuring that each detail is thoughtfully considered to exceed client expectations. Coordinate food and event catering services seamlessly in our banquet facilities, adhering to budgetary constraints and timelines, while maintaining healthy cost margins.
  • Elevate our catering and banquet service offerings through continuous improvement. Innovate and diversify menus and options, keeping them fresh, appealing, and in alignment with emerging culinary trends and client preferences.
  • Optimize profit margins with responsible food cost management.
  • Assume responsibility for various kitchen operations, including the opening and closing procedures, alongside other assigned duties directed by the Executive Director.
  • This dynamic role will contribute to the smooth functioning of our kitchen. Demonstrate flexibility and initiative by readily taking on additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned, supporting the overall success of our culinary team and ensuring a seamless dining experience for our guests.

Education Banquets Kitchen Manager
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Culinary Program preferred
Experience Banquets Kitchen Manager
  • 3 years of culinary experience in banquets or events
  • Restaurant or food and beverage department in a hotel, resort, or similar industry, preferred
Core Competencies Banquets Kitchen Manager
  • Must be able to work without close supervision
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills to ensure guests needs are met
  • Knowledge of concepts of food service management
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team
  • Ability to perform all banquet positions
  • Ability to supervise
  • Must be able to use Point of Sale Computer, sanitizing and disinfecting products, kitchen equipment (fryers, flat-top, grill, dish machine, toaster, soup warmers, blenders, pizza ovens, steam tables), and kitchen knives to cut (sandwiches, pizza, etc.)
  • May also need to travel to our Hammond, IN Campus, Gabis Arboretum in Valparaiso, IN, or other off site locations for events as needed
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25 to 50lbs frequently and up to 60lbs occasionally
  • Must have Food Safety certificate and Alcohol Certificate or complete training during initial 90 days
