PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Media and Communications Manager in the Kentucky State University (KSU) Land Grant Program (LGP) will provide leadership to the LGP Media and Communications group working directly with KSU Marketing and Communications. The Media and Communication unit provides support for the faculty and staff of the LGP programs and assists in University wide media initiatives.  

 

 

 

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Media and Communications Manager in the Kentucky State University (KSU) Land Grant Program (LGP) will provide leadership to the LGP Media and Communications working directly with KSU Marketing and Communications. The Media and Communication unit provides support for the faculty and staff of the LGP programs and assists in University wide media initiatives. The Media and Communication unit provides a range of support for the faculty and staff  including: 1) supervising a diverse, skilled communications staff in graphic design, video production, social media, special events, and educational outreach; 2) developing and producing all LGP television and broadcast programs as well as other promotional videos; and 3) develop and/or participate in the conceptual development, writing, layout, and design of annual reports, brochures, flyers, websites, feature writing, and video productions and scripts and other materials to support the LGP and KSU. This position will also mentor students in practicum experiences in the unit.

 

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Supervise a diverse, skilled communications staff in graphic design, video production, social media, special events, and educational outreach. Conduct a final edit of scientific proceedings, newsletters, news releases, scientific posters, and educational materials for the College of Agriculture and Land Grant Program and KSU projects.
  2. Work directly with KSU Marketing and Communications personnel and develop local, state, and national media initiatives.
  3. Develop and/or participate in the conceptual development, writing, layout, and design of annual reports, brochures, flyers, websites, feature writing, and video productions and scripts and other materials.
  4. Serve as developer and producer of all LGP television and broadcast programs as well as other promotional videos.
  5. Assist in the review of grant proposals.
  6. Develop, write, and work with graphic artist to layout designs for various presentation formats.
  7. Mentor practicum undergraduate students in media related projects.
  8. Set annual communications targets and contribute to and monitor their implementation.
  9. Develop and oversee social media accounts.
  10. Research and write grants.
  11. Prepare reports as required.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

The position will conduct other duties as required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Agricultural Communications, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related area. Three to five years of experience in developing publications, writing content, and layout/design for newsletters, news releases, and websites.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies within the university and industry setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to lead a diverse, skilled communications team.
  • Ability to work under deadline.
  • Proficiency in computer software for desktop publishing including Adobe Creative Suite and others.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Work could involve some exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Requires some standing or walking.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Some travel required.
