Overview of Desktop Engineer

Purdue University Northwest is seeking a Desktop Engineer to join our Central Desktop Administration team within the Division of Information Services. Desktop Engineer works with the Central Desktop Administration (CDA) team to manage all endpoints used by the Purdue University Northwest university community. The position will use endpoint management tools such as Microsoft Endpoint Management Console (MEMC/SCCM), JAMF Pro (Apple device management,) Active Directory Tools, etc. to deploy software packages, OS images, policies, and security patches to managed endpoints. Other endpoint devices, such as mobile devices and printers (PaperCut) are also managed by this team. This position also works closely with colleagues in Information Services and throughout the university to provide expertise to assist them in achieving their departmental goals through the use of technology. A successful candidate for this position should be excited to learn about emerging technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities of Desktop Engineer
  • Support, troubleshoot and maintain mission critical applications such as MECM, JAMF, Bomgar, Active Directory Tools, and Azure virtual desktop/software virtualization.
  • Create, test and maintain standard desktop images and software for use in deployment to IT maintained devices.
  • Create, test and maintain Group Policies and maintain the Active Directory structure used for IT maintained devices.
  • Act as technology experts for colleagues within IS and external, providing expertise to help them achieve their technology-related goals.
  • Test, deploy and report on the deployment of security patches and software to IT maintained devices.
  • Manage the printing environment at PNW using PaperCut

Education of Desktop Engineer
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer/technology-related degree program or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience of Desktop Engineer
  • 2 years of experience serving in an Endpoint Management role demonstrating a successful record of software and image deployment using a central desktop management system.
  • Serve in a role creating and maintaining computer images.
  • Serve in a role demonstrating excellent customer service and computer troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with service request ticket systems.
  • Experience with MECM (SCCM), JAMF, Active Directory Tools, Azure virtual desktop/software virtualization, and Bomgar.
  • Experience with Active Directory tools and Group policy preferred.
Core Competencies of Desktop Engineer
  • Experienced with building, packaging, managing and deploying desktop computer images and software using related software tools and utilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Apple and Windows based desktop computers, operating systems, utilities and related peripherals in a wired and wireless networked environment.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and repair knowledge of personal computers and related peripherals.
  • Ability to create and maintain documentation for processes and procedures.
