Community Engagement and Outreach Specialist

Position Summary:
The Monmouth University Urban Coast Institute (UCI) seeks applicants for the position of Community Engagement and Outreach Specialist to lead activities associated with UCI's Coastal Resilience Planning Support for Environmental Justice (EJ) Communities project. The mission of the UCI is to serve Monmouth University and the public as a forum for research, education, and collaboration in the development and implementation of science-based policies and programs that support stewardship of healthy, productive, and resilient coastal ecosystems and communities.

With the supervision of the Associate Director, the Community Engagement and Outreach Specialist will work with UCI staff and partners to lead climate vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, and implementation projects for EJ communities, infrastructure, and habitats. Based on a foundational understanding of climate change and its impacts on the built environment, society, and natural systems, and leveraging UCI's community resilience initiative, the selected candidate will lead multi-disciplinary teams on collaborative problem-solving and stakeholder engagement to help our EJ communities build a more resilient, just and sustainable future.

This position is a grant-funded, full-time, two-year position. The successful candidate's appointment can be fully remote or hybrid with some in person presence at the Monmouth University West Long Branch campus. Travel and attendance at in person community meetings is required. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is anticipated to start as soon as possible.

Other Requirements:
  • A B.S./B.A in communication, education, public policy, planning, geography, natural resources, or closely related field; or two years of experience in community or environmental planning.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience planning and facilitating virtual and in-person meetings and workshops.
  • Ability to travel to work locations throughout the state and participate in occasional evening and weekend meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience working with EJ communities and municipalities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience working with community organizations that focus on addressing environmental justice, disparities in health outcomes, inequities in living conditions, and/or lack of political power for communities of color, including Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Americans, immigrants, other People of Color (“BIPOC”), low-income communities, people with disabilities, and other historically disadvantaged people.
  • Knowledge or experience in modern principles and practices of environmental planning, climate vulnerability, and/or adaptation planning.
  • Additional experience working with state, regional, and local agencies and community organizations.
  • Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
  • Effectiveness in a teamwork environment.
