Job Description

SUMMARY :

The Assistant Dean for Academic Services (ADAS) serves as a key administrative leader for the Office of Academic Affairs. The position reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) who is the chief academic officer of the College and oversees all academic policies and programs, student academic success initiatives, and faculty/staff dedicated to fostering the intellectual life of the College.

The ADAS works in close partnership with the VCAA to support the institutional vision for the future, and to develop and implement initiatives to advance the College’s priorities in coordination and alignment with the overall strategic and action plans of Montclair State University. This position is integral to the high-quality delivery of and support for a range of administrative services led by the Office of Academic Affairs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
  • Lead and manage all areas under their direct supervision by providing consistent, transparent, positive communication in accordance with the college’s strategic plan, including supervision of an administrative assistant as a direct report.

  • Assist the VCAA with integrating and coordinating BC of MSU with MSU functions including a range of accreditation, assessment, budgeting, curricular, enrollment, governance, process, policy, personnel and operational issues.

  • Work to ensure continued academic excellence and diversity and inclusivity initiatives are institutional priorities.

  • Assure high quality student advising and leading student grievance policies are followed as established by MSU.

  • Develop and implement process, procedural and policy issues within the Office of Academic Affairs.

  • Serve as the lead administrator and point of content, for students, faculty and staff, for mediating student issues and concerns (grade appeals, academic dishonesty, etc.).

  • Work closely with Academic Programs and the Registrar’s Office to develop, review and approve course schedules and semester calendars.

  • Work with the Center for Student Success and other offices across campus as related to student outreach and retention efforts.

  • Attend and represent Academic Affairs at various functions, meetings, and committees; attend Chair and Directors meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS :

REQUIRED :
  • Master’s degree from accredited college or university.

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in higher education leadership roles.

  • Demonstrated leadership and abilities in the administration of higher education programs.

  • Experience communicating successfully and working collegially in a complex environment with various internal and external constituencies.

PREFERRED :
  • Doctoral degree.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education leadership roles.

  • A deep understanding of BC of MSU’s mission as a minority serving institution and academic excellence.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and a history of commitment to affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and diversity, equity and inclusion, and intercultural education.
