Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or other degree closely related to the area of assignment with twelve credit hours of accounting coursework or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Proficient in business applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Strong organization skills are required to effectively manage moderately complex tax programs and a significant number of deadlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary duty of this position is to review payments made to employees, students, independent contractors, and foreign national visitors through various means on campus. This position will also be responsible for remitting North Carolina non-resident withholding tax and assisting with multiple end of year tax fillings. The details of the these essential duties are below:

1099 and NC Non-Resident Contractor 4% Withholding
  • Review service contracts and make independent contractor vs. employee determination.
  • Review and determine the reporting requirements of gifts, awards, and prizes to both the campus community and non-university recipients
  • Reconcile and remit tax payments for NC 4% non-resident withholding tax on a monthly basis.
  • Review and determine taxability of campus payments for NC 4% non-resident withholding tax as needed.
  • Perform 1099 payments monthly reconciliation and track 1099 reportable payments made outside of the ERP system.
  • Reconcile and prepare for 1099- NEC, 1099- MISC and eNC-3 year end filing.
Foreign National Tax Compliance
  • Review and determine the withholding and reporting requirements for vendor payments made to foreign national individuals and entities.
  • Provide tax analysis including residency and treaty analysis for foreign national employees, students, and vendors when necessary.
  • Collaborate with various campus departments to ensure the receipt of all necessary information for year end reporting.
  • Provide assistance to the campus community on foreign national tax related matters.
  • Reconcile and prepare for 1042 and 1042-S year end filing.
Student Payments
  • Review student payments, including but not limited to scholarships, fellowships, stipends, human subject payments, gifts, awards, and prizes, to determine any 1098-T reporting requirements through various campus systems
  • Conduct monthly post-audit for student payments posted in the Banner ERP system.
Other Duties
  • Reconcile and file 1099-K for payment card and third party network transactions
  • Serve as the primary resource to the campus and management for the assigned tax areas. Offering solutions for tax matters while ensuring the University’s full compliance.
  • Assist the supervisor with payroll withholding tax and unemployment tax registration in other states as needed.
  • Reconcile tax accounts and assist the Director in resolving tax issues through research and analysis of tax codes, regulations, and other related materials.
  • Stay up to date with current tax laws pertaining to the assigned tax areas through research and various training.
  • Document business processes pertaining to this position’s duties and participate in cross-training
  • Other duties as assigned
Suggested Salary Range
$61,545 - $64,007
