The Religion Department at Middlebury College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in Biblical studies and religion in the ancient Mediterranean to begin July 1st, 2022. While having a solid historical and linguistic training is indispensable, we welcome candidates whose research and teaching integrates diverse methodological approaches including but not limited to archaeology and material culture, gender and sexuality, and/or contextual and minoritized interpretations. Teaching responsibilities will include an introduction to biblical literature with attention to the cultural contexts of Mediterranean antiquity. Other courses may include, but are not limited to, courses on the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, early Judaism and Christianity, and Introduction to Religion. In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute regularly to the college-wide curriculum, including the first-year seminar program and winter term curriculum. Our faculty have significant freedom to develop courses according to their own intellectual interests. Our department relishes the challenge of teaching religious studies to undergraduates in a liberal arts setting. We also cultivate conversations among ourselves about our varied approaches to the study of religion as well as our shared interests and seek candidates who would welcome and contribute to such discussions.

To apply, please submit through Interfolio at (1) a Curriculum Vitae; (2) a cover letter (please make sure to include evidence of commitment to excellence in teaching as well as research potential); (3) contact information for three references (two of which must be able to speak to your teaching abilities), and (4) undergraduate and graduate transcripts. The College also requires all candidates to submit (5) a statement on diversity and inclusion. Diversity is understood broadly to include racial, socioeconomic, religious, and ideological forms among others. The deadline for the submission of material is October 15, 2021.

Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. Information on our background check policy can be found here:
