Binghamton University, a premier public, highly ranked research university, seeks to fill a tenured faculty position in the area of measurement and evaluation with expertise and/or interest in assessing outcomes of K-12 schools, especially in the area of community schools. Candidates must have a record of research and publications equivalent to that of a full professor at an R1 doctoral institution and an established reputation that can help build our growing programs. This position will be housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA). CCPA departments include Human Development, Public Administration, Social Work, Student Affairs Administration, and Teaching, Learning, and Educational Leadership. CCPA is home to nationally renowned Binghamton University Community Schools (BUCS) and offers an online advanced certificate in Community Schools. In addition, CCPA offers an Interdisciplinary doctoral program in Community Research and Action (PhD) and an EdD in Education Theory, Research, and Practice, along with masters' programs that are shared with other colleges in Public Health and Sustainable Communities. Faculty members in CCPA take advantage of classroom and office space on both the main campus in Vestal and the University Downtown Campus, located in the heart of the city of Binghamton, in close proximity to local agencies and schools. We seek an established scholar to join our dynamic and collaborative team. CCPA faculty possess deep expertise in a variety of areas including child welfare, education, healthcare, human rights, mental health interventions, non-profit organizations, organizational change, policy analysis, poverty, social justice, substance use and misuse, and sustainability. The primary role for this person will be to develop, validate and implement a repository of instruments to measure the impacts of community schools, and secondarily, to partner with CCPA faculty colleagues to design and implement instruments to conduct culturally-responsive program evaluations in an array of social science fields.
The ideal candidate for this position will have demonstrated through high quality, peer-reviewed publications and presentations their ability to conduct research and evaluation outcome studies utilizing quantitative research designs (e.g., causal inference, computational social science, quasi-experimental, cohort design, propensity score matching, longitudinal, geographic information systems, social network analysis) and psychometric methods/instrument design (e.g., assessment development, survey design, measurement validation, examination of test/survey bias). They will also have a strong record of disseminating evaluation findings. We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise and/or interest in applying those methods to educational and social science research questions centered around measuring the impact of the community school pillars (e.g., collaborative leadership, expanded and enriched learning time, family and community collaboration, integrated student supports), as well as the complex dimensions of community school outcomes (e.g., academic, climate, community vitality, economic mobility, health, safety). We welcome applicants from multiple social science disciplines. The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in evaluation, assessment, measurement theory, and quantitative methods, both in-person and online.
Required qualifications include:
- An earned doctorate from an accredited university in a related field (e.g., measurement and evaluation, education, applied statistics, psychology, public administration, social work, educational or social policy, or sociology)
- Minimum of ten years of experience performing social science research and/or conducting evaluation studies
- Proficiency in one or more analytical software platforms and packages such as STATA, SPSS, R, SAS, or MAXQDA
- A strong research record demonstrated through high quality, peer-reviewed publications and presentations
- A robust record of externally funded research support or the potential for one
- Demonstrated history of collaborating with principal investigators (PI) as an externally funded program/grant evaluator
- Skilled at leading and managing large-scale evaluations
- Expertise in quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Experience mentoring graduate-level scholars engaged in research
- Excellent analytic, verbal, and written communication skills
- Demonstrated experience conceptualizing transdisciplinary research and/or evaluation studies that promote diversity, social justice, equity, and the study of the representation of marginalized communities or institutional inequities
Other preferred qualifications include:
- Experience performing social science research and evaluation in one or more of the following areas: community schools, wrap-around models, research-practice partnerships, comprehensive school transformation, systems of care, and/or school climate
- Capacity to easily collaborate with researchers across disciplines and methodologies
- Evidence of successful teaching in-person and/or online
- Experience in curriculum development around evaluation or research methodology
In the selection process, the search committee will prioritize collaborative scholars who: (1) engage in nationally and internationally recognized work, (2) are actively pursuing grants, awards, and other sources of external funding to support research and/or evaluation projects, (3) demonstrate an eagerness to contribute to undergraduate and graduate training in the areas of educational evaluation and psychometrics, and (4) work with diverse populations or on questions of equity. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
