The School of International Letters & Cultures (SILC) at Arizona State University (Tempe Campus) invites applications for an assistant or associate teaching professor in the area of Second Language Acquisition and Language Pedagogy. We seek a candidate who specializes in Russian Second Language Acquisition and Language Pedagogy with interests including Russian language outside of Russia, Russian language in global media, and foreign influences in Russian language. The successful candidate will be expected to teach all levels of Russian to undergraduates, coordinate the Russian language program, and participate in service to the unit, university, and profession. Initial one-year contract, contingent on merit and funding, and the possibility for promotion. Competitive salary. Anticipated start date is August 16, 2024.

Required qualifications:

  • A PhD (or equivalent degree) with a specialization in Russian Second Language Acquisition, or Russian Language Pedagogy, or Applied Linguistics
  • Documented evidence of excellent teaching of all levels of Russian at a U.S. university
  • Demonstrated experience in proficiency-based language teaching and in language assessment up through ACTFL advanced mid (ILR 2) and above
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English

Desired qualifications:

  • Ability to employ pedagogical technologies, including course management systems, digital media, and other tools as appropriate to deliver course content, facilitate student interaction and production, and assess student outcomes
  • Experience teaching intensive Russian courses
  • ACTFL training and certification
  • Professionally active in relevant professional organizations
  • Experience in study abroad and public outreach

ASU’s Russian program is thriving as one of the twenty languages offered in SILC. We rank among the largest US Russian programs in terms of majors, with more majors than minors. Our dedicated students last year won over thirty prestigious awards, including a Pickering, a Boren, 3 Fulbright’s, and 2 Critical Language Scholarships, in addition to 4 State Department internships, and silver and bronze medals in the American Council of Teachers of Russian National Essay Contest, in which all students participate. Key to their success are ASU’s Critical Languages Institute, where students study summers tuition free, in Tempe and in Bishkek, and the Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies, which has a Title VI National Resource Center with Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) funding.
