Job Description

The Research Associate Professor or Research Professor and Assistant Director, under the general supervision of the Professor and Executive Associate Director, is responsible for the day-to-day management, leadership and development of portfolios of agricultural research with the strategic plan for the Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC) in the College of Agriculture Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR). This position assists in formulating and implementing policy and procedures and provides operational leadership to research teams, conducts independent research activities related to identified statewide critical issues as outlined in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) plan of work, provides strategic advice on best practices in research design and development, research management and the agricultural research landscape.

Responsibilities:
  • Leads strategic planning in areas supervised, plans/initiates and manages cross-functional collaborations to expand land grant mission and assists in developing and implementing overall strategic plans for the research center; participates in statewide planning and promotes the integrated plan of work across mission areas by collaborating with research, extension, academics and farm personnel and solicits collaborative expertise from other areas to address regional and statewide needs; initiates active engagement of department head(s) in annual program briefing and planning meeting in order to assure coordinated approach at state level which includes joint Extension programming where appropriate, as well as collaboration between center and campus-based personnel; interacts with regional industry leaders and Extension personnel about research programs and solicits input on research needs; coordinates regional activities and cultivation of external interests with state Extension and Research reflect comprehensive representation of Prairie View A&M University and TAMUS, involving department heads and other administrators where appropriate.

  • Assists leadership in leading the work of continuous improvement within the center to include its research strategy and operating framework by providing expert advice and design input on research in the unit’s area of interest(s); works with colleagues in each of the strategic priority areas on the unit’s large-scale projects and initiatives and formulating projects in the NIFA grants management and reporting systems (Current Research Information System (CRIS) and/or NIFA Reporting System (NRS)); assists with the development of research programs with emphasis on regional needs and priorities and provides leadership for regional strategic planning for research with active involvement of department heads; establishes goals for project delivery, manages project quality control and assurance and develops reports and analyses to achieve/communicate optimal results/impact.

  • Manages the research plan effectively and efficiently, ensuring that accepted standards of research and ethical behavior are communicated and met; assists with the preparation of the plan of work and annual budget for the center and provides operational leadership and management of research teams to ensure that projects are delivered on time and that budget management and forecasting are robust.

  • Conducts independent research activities in an area of interest to the unit. Writes, edits, and/or submits research project proposals aligned with the plan of work to address critical regional or statewide issues; designs, plans, conducts, and coordinates studies in support of research projects; teaches a course, periodically, involving experiential learning that connects research with academics;.

  • Monitors compliance with department, University, Agency, and/or government standards, policies, and procedures and analyzes existing operations and provides recommendations for improvements; serves on various unit committees and promotes research activity and productivity by writing research proposals, publishing manuscripts, and presenting at scientific conferences.

  • Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, committees and performs other duties inclusive as deemed necessary.

Required Education & Experience:
  • Doctoral degree in agricultural and life sciences or related fields.

  • Seven years of research experience beyond graduate school with evidence of quality teaching experience.

  • Have demonstrated knowledge of contemporary research in agricultural and or biomedical areas.

  • Academic and research records (including peer-reviewed publications, external grants, teaching and pedagogical contributions) should be such that it merits the appointment at the rank of Research Associate Professor or Research Professor.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of USDA and land grant programs especially as they relate to 1890 institutions.

  • Knowledge of USDA NIFA, Section 1445 federal funding for agricultural research activities at 1890 land-grant institutions administrative requirements and terms and conditions.

  • Knowledge and experience in research aligned with the high priority areas of the US federal funding agencies, securing external grants, publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
