ATTENTION:

The Department of Educational Foundations in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor (FA040).

Seeking an Assistant Professor with expertise in library studies, school library media, information science, educational technology, or related field. This position will serve as program director for the Library Media program.



JOB DETAILS:

Academic preparation should reflect one or more of the following broad areas: library studies, school library media, information science, educational technology, social foundations of education, or related fields. The position will begin in August 2024. Primary responsibilities of the position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in connection with the Library Media program and the UW System School Library Education Cooperative (UWSSLEC).

Responsibilities also include directing the Library Media program in coordination with supporting faculty and staff. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to advising, conduct and maintain a scholarly research agenda, and provide service to the university, community, and profession. The candidates will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace inclusion as a member of the university community.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D., Ed.D., or other equivalent, terminal degree in a related field
  • ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2024; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2025 in advance of their first scheduled review.
  • Expertise and/or equivalent experience in library studies, school library media, or information science
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working as a K-12, higher education, or public librarian
  • Expertise in educational technology
  • Experience teaching, supervising, and/or advising in higher education
  • Experience, teaching, and/or research activity related to inclusive libraries
  • Experience teaching in online and hybrid classrooms
  • Clear evidence of scholarly potential or achievement
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching responsibilities include teaching courses in the Library Media Program and University of Wisconsin System School Library Education Collaborative (UWSSLEC). Administrative responsibilities include program coordination of the library media program. The administrative responsibility reduces the average teaching load to 3 courses each semester, with any additional grant and administrative duties leading to further course load reductions. Administrative responsibilities continue through the summer semesters and will be compensated with additional stipends. Research responsibilities include maintaining an active research agenda including publications in peer-reviewed journals or books and attending research conferences. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations and within your professional discipline, as relevant to the candidate's expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach in a variety of formats, including in-person, online, and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings or on weekends.

  • Finding and Using Information / Virtual Libraries (LIBMEDIA 350/756)
  • Leadership (LIBMEDIA 455/751)
  • Organizing Information (LIBMEDIA 451/651)
Administrative Role:

In coordination with supporting faculty and staff, administrative responsibilities include:
  • Leadership
    • Coordinate meetings, discussions, and innovative approaches for the University of Wisconsin System Shared Library Education Consortium (UWSSLEC) with colleagues from a partner university
  • Planning
    • Design budgets and course rotations with department colleagues, university partners, and instructors
  • Assessment
    • Develop and evaluate program and course assessments, such as portfolios, in tandem with university partners, instructors, and other key stakeholders
  • Marketing
    • Collaborate with university marketing professionals to create both face-to-face and digital marketing strategies to recruit future candidates and share

The Department of Educational Foundations is a highly collegial, collaborative, and interdisciplinary department, which seeks to foster the development of knowledge, skills, and dispositions most vital to the future work of outstanding educators. Our department offers courses for all undergraduate students in the College of Education and Professional Studies to build the core foundations of educational psychology, learner development, technology and assessment integration, history and philosophy of education, and equity and diversity in education. About UWSSLEC:

The UW System School Library Education Collaborative (UWSSLEC) is a collaboration between UW Whitewater and UW Oshkosh, with some participation from UW Madison, to provide the 1902 licensure courses to students across the state. We are committed to providing these courses in a format that accommodates working teachers or school librarians, taught by faculty from our universities. UWSSLEC courses are offered asynchronously online with one face-to-face residency weekend per course. The residency weekend is held at the campus teaching the course. We use the home campus model so that students enroll at one university and enroll in all courses as if they were taught at that university even if they are taught at the other campus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting salary of $60,000 for a 9-month contract, along with $5,000 additional summer stipend for program administration. Additional compensation for technology, research dissemination, and professional development activities are available.
