Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of English ( is a vibrant and energetic community of teachers, scholars, researchers, and writers. The diversity of this department is one of its strengths, and our majors benefit from a breadth of faculty expertise across many areas of study. Our faculty and students pursue interests and scholarship in literature, creative writing, technical and professional communication, rhetoric and composition, multicultural and transnational literature, folklore, film studies, linguistics, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Our department offers four degrees: a B.A. in English; a B.S. in Professional Writing and Information Design; an M.A. in English; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication. The department also offers undergraduate minors in English, creative writing, film studies, and linguistics. The department also supports general education for all majors across the university through Writing Foundations courses and courses that contribute to writing intensive, diversity, humanities, and social science general education requirements. The Department of English works closely with other departments whose degree programs include our courses. Our faculty and students are important partners in advancing the university’s strategic plan area of distinction as a cultural champion in our region and beyond.

Job Duties        
The Department of English at East Carolina University ( seeks applicants for a position in Fiction Writing at the Assistant Professor rank to begin in August 2024. A tenure-track position in the Department of English requires the faculty member to demonstrate professional competence and achievements in teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service.

Pertaining to this position, creative activity including long or short works of fiction must be peer-reviewed or have received rigorous editorial screening. This is a 9-month-per-year tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will teach creative writing courses including both undergraduate and graduate fiction workshops and other English courses as needed; supervise student theses; publish fiction; recruit and retain undergraduate and graduate students; and participate in service for the benefit of the department, the institution, and the discipline.

Minimum Education/Experience
MFA in Creative Writing or PhD in English Language and Literature or a closely related field is required. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Evidence of strong creative activity including significant fiction publications (at least one book of fiction in print or in press with a nationally recognized press), as well as experience teaching fiction writing at a college or university are expected.
