POSITION OVERVIEW: The Director of Conferences & Visitor Services (C&VS) provides the overall leadership and management for the Department, which represents the University in welcoming visitors; plans and hosts conferences, events, and summer camps; and operates the University of Maryland Welcome Desks. C&VS is in the Division of Student Affairs and partners with Resident Life, Residential Facilities, Dining Services, Transportation Services, Admissions, Athletics, and academic units.

The Director provides strategic leadership to the department: oversees approximately 190 on and off-campus conferences and events, including temporary resident housing for more than 18,000 guests and 80,000 bed nights annually for academic conferences, athletic programs, youth programs, and other activities; and ensures the operation of the UMD Welcome Desks that greet hundreds of visitors and provides hundreds of campus-wide guided tours each year.

Specific job responsibilities include:

Manage Services (20%) - Establish departmental expectations for customer service with the highest standards for hospitality and professionalism and in congruence with the University’s educational mission. Partner with off-campus entities (such as other conference centers, hotels, restaurants, and technical contractors) and with on-campus entities (such as Residential Facilities, Dining Services, and Intercollegiate Athletics) to facilitate the development and implementation of high-quality services.


Planning (15%) - Develop short-term and long-term operational plans for optimal customer service delivery and dependable revenue streams. Engage in strategic planning to ensure University resources are appropriately leveraged to meet the mission of the institution in a fiscally responsible manner. 


Contract Management (30%) -  Ensure quality delivery and satisfaction of approximately 180 contracts annually. Negotiate and manage agreement terms. Develop new initiatives and seek additional business to drive revenue growth


Staffing Collaborations (15%) - Supervise staff of 5 professionals who are responsible for event planning, logistics, marketing, facilities oversight, participant support, accounting, and administration. Indirectly supervise more than 100 student employees. Indirectly oversee a staff of 135 volunteers with the Senior Volunteer Service Corps, a group of primarily retired people who dedicate their time to supporting the University across campus.
