Founding Director, Physician Assistant Program

The Virtua Health College of Medicine & Life Sciences of Rowan University is an innovative and historic academic health partnership between Rowan University and Virtua Health and a vehicle for enhanced collaboration between two of its constituents, the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Rita & Larry Salva School of Nursing & Health Professions, to prepare the healthcare workforce of the future and to improve patient care, health, and wellness for all in a diverse community. The School of Nursing & Health Professions currently offers undergraduate and/or graduate programs in nursing, respiratory therapy, nutrition, athletic training, exercise science, public health & wellness, and wellness management.

We are accepting applications for the position of Founding Director of the Master of Science in Physician Assistant (MSPA) program . The program will be offered on the campus of Rowan College of Jersey in Sewell, NJ, which also houses the Sewell campus of the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. The Program Director will report to the Dean of the Rita & Larry Salva School of Nursing & Health Professions and will work closely with program personnel to develop and administer the program in compliance with the standards of the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA). The Program Director will also work collaboratively with the leadership and faculty of programs in nursing, the allied and affiliated health professions, and Rowan University’s two medical schools to provide students with educational experiences reflecting interprofessional practice and care.

Initially the successful candidate will collaborate with the dean’s office to facilitate successful passage of the proposed program through the New Jersey state approval process and to prepare the new program for successful provisional accreditation and implementation. Once the program is established, the Program Director will be expected to administer the program, including scheduling courses and recruiting and supporting instructors for the MSPA courses each term, and providing orientation and resources for teaching as needed. The Program Director will oversee recruitment activities, admissions events and orientations, student support, and field education.

Responsibilities will include program planning and development; ongoing review and assessment of program activities; fiscal planning; curricular oversight; coordination of clinical education with didactic and laboratory activities; student recruitment; teaching in the program; and service. The position is a full-time 12-month appointment with allocated workload of 0.8 FTE for academic responsibilities including administration and teaching and 0.2 FTE for clinical practice within Rowan Medicine, an affiliate of Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine and the Virtua Medical Group. Initially, academic responsibilities will be devoted to administration as necessary to achieve provisional accreditation and program launch.

The responsibilities of the founding director will be to:
  • Provide oversight and leadership for the MSPA program
  • Recruit a diverse faculty and student body and cultivate an inclusive environment
  • Oversee all aspects of program development and align them with ARC-PA accreditation standards
  • Demonstrate current working knowledge of physician assistant roles and best practices
  • Facilitate interprofessional collaborations and initiatives with Virtua Health and with Rowan’s two medical schools, in particular the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Oversee initial and follow up accreditation reporting
  • Develop advanced degree curricula
  • Oversee effective and meaningful assessment of program outcomes and student learning outcomes
  • Develop affiliation agreements with area hospitals and healthcare centers for student clinical practice experience
  • Engage in professional collaboration with area clinical affiliates to ensure contemporary practices, advisory committee development, grant, and graduate employment opportunities
  • Anticipate needs for new curricular development in emerging areas of practice
  • Develop and implement strategies for student retention and success
  • Work collaboratively with supporting departments such as the Office of Pre-Health Programs, admissions, and advisement
  • Develop agreements with educational partners to cultivate applicant pools
  • Teach in the program
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
The successful candidate possesses the following qualifications:
  • Must be a Physician Assistant, with current NCCPA certification
  • Must have/be eligible for a Physician Assistant license in New Jersey.
  • Must possess at least three years of full-time higher education experience at the time of appointment (doctoral degree preferred but not required)
  • Experience in directing or supervising a program in academic or healthcare settings
  • Experience leading program accreditation, preferably both provisional and continuing, through ARC-PA
  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills
  • Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology or proven ability to learn these skills
  • Ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners in large and small settings
  • Utilization of innovative teaching methods incorporating technology, including on-line resources
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment.
The position is available December 18, 2023.

The position will include a faculty appointment at a level appropriate to the successful candidate’s expertise, experience, and accomplishments.

Minimum salary will be $150,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
